Western Greek Ports Compete to Back Ionian Drilling Push

Three western Greek ports are vying to become the main support base for planned hydrocarbon drilling in the Ionian Sea, a decision expected to channel as much as 400 million euros into port services, logistics and related work.

The race pits Patras, Igoumenitsa and Astakos against one another as Greece advances toward exploratory drilling under a contract signed in April 2026.

The selected port will handle vessel servicing, equipment maintenance, crew transport and storage, making it a central node in the project’s supply chain. Industry estimates put nearly 40% of the wider 1 billion euro investment into port support and ancillary operations.

Panagiotis Anastasopoulos, chief executive of the Port of Patras, said the city’s academic base and proximity to the Ionian fields give it an advantage.

Mr. Anastasopoulos said the project could generate steady revenue from specialized maritime services and create hundreds of direct jobs in technical work and security.

In Igoumenitsa, chief executive Thanasis Porfiris cast the competition as a geoeconomic shift for a port long known mainly as a ferry link to Italy.

Mr. Porfiris said the port’s new master plan includes greener infrastructure, including onshore power supply, to reduce the environmental footprint of heavier industrial activity.

Under regional arrangements, local municipalities would also receive a share of port revenues for infrastructure.

Astakos is touting its Platygiali zone, citing its separation from urban areas and deepwater access for large supply vessels. Dimitris Kolonias, vice president of Akarport S.A., said the port’s storage capacity makes it well suited for specialized technical support.

The Greek tugboat and platform supply vessel sector is also preparing for the work.

Pavlos Xiradakis, president of the Greek Tugowners Association, said Greek-owned platform supply vessels are ready for the job and already have international experience from projects in Brazil and West Africa.
