Asynt adds overhead stirring to PressureSyn for more demanding high-pressure chemistry

by · News-Medical

The updated modular PressureSyn introduces an optional overhead stirring manifold, addressing a limitation of magnetic stirring in demanding high-pressure reactions: as viscosity or solids content increases, magnetic coupling can lose consistent contact with the stir bar, leading to unreliable mixing. Compatible with widely used stirrer motors, such as IKA, the manifold provides greater torque and reliable mechanical agitation, making it particularly suited to viscous reactions, catalyst suspensions, mixtures with a high solids content and reactions in which precipitates form. It can also improve gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid contact in applications such as hydrogenation and heterogeneous catalysis, where effective mass transfer is essential.

At the heart of PressureSyn is its safety-key and locking-clamp mechanism. Each key is matched to an individual reactor and must be removed before the clamp can be unlocked. Removing the key opens a vent path in the reactor head, allowing any residual pressure to escape before the vessel can be opened. With a pressure relief valve supplied as standard, users can also specify an optional bursting disc as a further safety precaution.

Developed in collaboration with chemists and engineers at the University of Nottingham (UK), PressureSyn is manufactured from traceable, certified 316 stainless steel, operates up to 200 bar and 200 °C, and pairs with Asynt's DrySyn adapter plate for secure, efficient heat transfer on any standard hotplate stirrer. Additional features, including a spare port for custom attachments and options for precise temperature monitoring, make it well suited to applications such as hydrogenation, catalysis, hydrothermal synthesis, and materials testing.

Martyn Fordham, Managing Director, AsyntPressure chemistry places particular demands on both equipment design and operator confidence, Chemists asked for the same high-safety system with greater torque and more dependable mixing in challenging reaction mixtures, so the new option was developed to extend the range of chemistry that can be carried out in PressureSyn. At the same time, it was critical to retain the compact format and safety-led design that distinguish PressureSyn.”

PressureSyn forms part of Asynt's broader range of single and multi-position laboratory pressure reactors, designed to support chemists across academia and industry, from routine screening to more complex bespoke systems.
