Analog horror pioneer Local 58 returns after a year with "Ad Spot"
by Grant St. Clair · Boing BoingAs far as analog horror projects go, writer/director Kris Straub's "Local 58" is the only one I've ever been able to tolerate for more than a couple installments. It could also reasonably be called the progenitor of the entire genre, which I'm sure is related.
The Local 58 channel presents itself as a collection of broadcasts from a fictional public-access TV station, covering such diverse topics as eldritch moon gods, PSAs urging you to die for your country, or malevolent GPS navigators conveniently delivering you to your death. While there are common themes between videos, each one is a deliciously dreadful horror short in its own right, and very worth the 45 minutes or so it'll take you to get through the entire channel.
After more than a year, Local 58 is back, dropping the played-out (by other people, to be clear!) analog horror aesthetic in favor of a fresh, modern, digital approach that's no less horrifying. The simply titled "Ad Spot" seems to be the start of a longer "arc" in Local 58's output, at least if the real in-universe website it points viewers toward is anything to go by.
Remember, as bad as AI is, it could always be even worse!
