The Sopranos is finally getting a 4K box set
by Grant St. Clair · Boing BoingWhaddaya hear, whaddaya say?! Look, if you're in the typical age bracket of this site's readership, you don't need me to wax poetic about how good The Sopranos is. David Chase's mob masterpiece, which was about America as a whole in all its avaricious glory, has stood the test of time as one of the best-written TV shows ever made, only elevated even further by a full ensemble cast's worth of best-in-career performances.
It's my pick for the best show in TV history, maaaaybe tied with Better Call Saul. Which makes it even weirder that Chase hasn't done anything worthwhile since then. Still, if he can stay fixated on The Sopranos forever, so can I, damn it.
And so, it seems, can the people at HBO. The Sopranos is finally getting a 4K UHD box set so I can keep it on my shelf forever and stop having to get HBO Max every time I want to rewatch. It currently only seems to be available for preorder through Gruv, a Universal storefront that looks weirdly low-budget considering its parent company.
It's a lot of discs. It's a lot of dollars, too: $150 for all 86 episodes, with mercifully no mention of the terrible prequel movie. Lotta money in this 4K restoration shit. Apparently, the infamous "CGI Livia" scene, wherein actress Nancy Marchand is posthumously resurrected as an uncanny-looking ghoul, has finally been fixed — which honestly might be worth the price of admission all on its own.
