Amiga Freeware Archive

The Amiga Freeware Archive is a searchable catalog of free software for Commodore's Amiga, the world's first psychedelic computer. There are 18,608 downloads to peruse, including scene groups, disk magazines, compilations and other wonders of the system's legendary creative community.

In my acrylic case were maybe a hundred floppies, the contents of each neatly inscribed on the 3.3mm label edge with a Pilot V5. There's games, apps, demos, slideshows, music (mods!) and dev tools for 68000-series Amigas running Kickstart 1, 2 and 3. The largest set is 17 Bit Software, not far from where I lived; American Amiga users will find all Fred Fish's stuff too.

The curator is Richard Downer, an Edinburgh-based software engineer who works on FPGAs and retro hardware. His GitHub includes various Amiga pleasures; here's a lament for the blogs and forums. The site is written in XHTML 1.0 Transitional so it runs, at least in principle, on a real Amiga. Completeness is an issue:

Most of the archive content came from CD-ROM compilations, which simply omitted some titles. The CD-ROM catalogs didn't explain why disks were missing, so we are left to guess as to why. Occasionally a commercial software title would accidentally end up in a PD library catalog, and that title would have to be withdrawn from the library for copyright reasons. Titles may also be removed for other legal reasons, or because they contain content that the PD library no longer wants to distribute (in the early days, some PD libraries distributed some adult content, and later removed it). Disks are also a fallible and sometimes fragile medium, and especially in the later days it's possible that during the transfer to CD-ROM that some disks had deteriorated and could no longer be read.

If you're thinking of dusting off the A500 in the attic (you'll need something like this too) remember that all those floppy images are still infested up to the eyeballs.
