YouTube to label AI videos automatically
by Rob Beschizza · Boing BoingIf a thick sheen of slop doesn't give the game away, YouTube will expose AI-generated video for what it is. The site announced today that such uploads would be labeled automatically upon detection. The label, first introduced 6 months ago, will also be more prominently displayed.
We're moving the disclosure label for photorealistic and meaningfully AI altered or generated content to a more prominent position.
For Shorts: The label will appear as an overlay on the video itself.
For Long-form Videos: The label will now appear directly below the video player, above the description.
YouTube says it requires creators to manually disclose the use of AI, but wants to make that process more "seamless and reliable," though it doesn't admit the obvious: uploaders lie because the tag is, to many creators and users, a mark of shame.
Creators can remove the automatic tag if the identification is incorrect, but YouTube warns that disclosures will be permanent if it knows better.
including:
Content created using YouTube's own AI tools, like Veo or Dream Screen.
Content containing C2PA metadata indicating they were fully generative AI.
