Mississippi District Attorney's "depraved" AI slop posts a reminder that "everyone is 12 now"
by Rob Beschizza · Boing BoingA district attorney's office in Mississippi found a reliable way to get social media attention: post mugshots of suspects enhanced with AI and AI glow-ups of the DA himself. The postings reach at humor but come off as weird (or "depraved," as one critic puts it) and are nothing if not a sign of the times.
Other posts include some kind of promotion/warning for the office's accolades, with one poster even likening District Attorney Matthew Barton to a Jedi from Star Wars, presumably for his efforts in bringing balance to the law, at least in DeSoto County. The posts have since brought the office into the spotlight and drawn social media attention, and it appears they're not about to stop soon.
Some of the images are fairly innocuous, such as the one above putting Christmas hats on arrestees. Others are ominous and deceptive, including fake AI-generated photos of suspects. The office's postings generally have a groyper-wannabe vibe, emulating that style but too vain and fusty to get it right. The misuse of AI in Mississippi's justice system is becoming its own genre of news; it is as if the legal community there is experiencing some kind of mass AI psychosis.
Or maybe it's just that everyone is 12 now.
