WhatsApp today is more than just a messaging app. For millions of users, it serves as the primary channel for personal conversations, workplace coordination, and business communication. So when access to WhatsApp accounts disappears overnight, the disruption extends far beyond just chats and messaging.

This week, several users across India and other regions reported that their WhatsApp accounts were suddenly placed under review, with the platform saying it was checking “account activity and device information” to ensure compliance with its ‘Terms of Service’. WhatsApp said the review process could take up to 24 hours.

While some users regained access within a few hours, others remained locked out or claimed their accounts had been permanently banned without a clear explanation. The incident has raised fresh questions over WhatsApp’s automated enforcement systems, transparency around moderation decisions, and the effectiveness of its grievance redressal process.

Sudden WhatsApp Bans, Little Clarity

Among those affected was Deepak K Viswanathan, cofounder of Vanaalaya, who took to X after discovering that his WhatsApp account had been banned.

“WhatsApp has banned my account. For absolutely no reason. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea what the next steps are?” he wrote.

His account was restored nearly three hours later after he reached out to Meta support.
