Let’s admit it–we all have at least one, if not more, old makeup pieces that we can’t seem to let go of, no matter how old they really are. Call it sentimental attachment or the last remains of a favourite product before it was discontinued, but we continue to blissfully ignore the printed date on the packaging and apply it on our faces. But is it safe?

The Problem With Using Expired Makeup: “The problem with using products after they cross the expiration date is that the composition may change and therefore you’re at risk of contamination from bacteria,” says Pooja Savla, Creative Stylist and Lead Make Up, Looks salons. This could result in skin irritation and pore blockages which will eventually cause breakouts, acne, and redness. “This is why ensure to check the period after opening which tells you how long a product should be used once the seal is off,” she explains.

When To Throw Out Liquid Makeup:You know how sometimes you open a fresh bottle of liquid foundation only to notice two separate liquids in the bottle a few days later? Well, most liquid products are a mix of water and silicone or oil, and often, a new product can go bad due to various factors including weather, temperature, etc which results in the two phases separating. “You might notice a change in the texture, smell and how it wears and once you do, it’s best to throw it out instead of risking it,” adds Pooja.

What About Mascaras & Lipsticks: “A giveaway of lipsticks gone bad is when they smell like crayons. Dispose it immediately,” says Pooja. With mascaras, Pooja says that no matter what the tube says, it’s best to replace it every three to six months. “Using it after its expiration date could lead to eye infections,” warns Pooja. Remember to throw out dried mascara instead of adding a liquid to the tube and shaking it.

What About Powder Products?: The good news about powder products is that you properly take care of them, you can use them for years to come since they don’t contain water or oils. “Close the lid every time you’re done using the product, and store it in a cool dry environment, and use a brush,” adds Pooja.
