700 runners to race for Wular marathon today - Greater Kashmir
by GK NEWS SERVICE · Greater KashmirBandipora, Nov 2: The Border Security Force (BSF) is set to host its inaugural Wular Half Marathon on Sunday, combining athletic achievement with environmental awareness around Asia’s second-largest freshwater lake.
Under the banner “Save Wular, Run with Borderman,” the event will feature three race categories starting from BSF Campus Bandipora and Wular Vantage Park. The half marathon will begin at 6:30 AM, followed by 5 km and 10 km races between 7:30-7:45 AM. All races conclude at Wular Vantage Park.
The marathon aims to spotlight North Kashmir’s natural treasures, including Manasbal Lake, Arin meadows, Athwatoo, and the Gurez and Tulail valleys while strengthening BSF’s community bonds in the region.
Over 700 participants, both male and female, have registered for the event. Runners will compete for prizes worth four lakh rupees, with all finishers receiving medals and certificates. The organizers have already distributed race t-shirts and bibs to participants.
A cultural programme will complement the sporting events, with several civil and military dignitaries expected to attend this landmark occasion.
The marathon runs from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM in Bandipora district, North Kashmir, showcasing the pristine waters of Wular Lake while promoting its conservation and development as a tourist destination.
