Sick Newborn Care Unit inaugurated at SDH Uri - Greater Kashmir

Uri, Nov 16: In a significant development aimed at providing much-needed relief to expecting mothers, the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) was inaugurated at the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday.

This marks the first-ever establishment of SNCU at SDH Uri and it was inaugurated by MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi.

The eight-bed facility is designed to offer advanced care for newborns who are ill or are born prematurely.

Dr Balwinder Singh, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Uri, said that the unit will enable healthcare professionals to provide specialised treatment to newborns suffering from a range of health conditions.

“The SNCU will offer services such as neonatal intensive care, care for premature babies, infection management, respiratory support, nutritional assistance, cardiorespiratory monitoring, and surgical care,” Singh said.

He added that the facility will bring much needed relief to the lives of pregnant ladies of this border town.

The unit is equipped with the facilities including incubators, warmers, ventilators, cardiorespiratory monitors, ultrasound machines, blood gas analysers and infant ventilators. The facility has been set up at an estimated cost of around Rs 48 lakhs.

Dr Sajjad in his address at the inauguration praised the initiative calling the establishment of the SNCU at SDH Uri a significant step forward for better healthcare of newborns.

“Newborns will no longer need to be shifted to hospitals in Baramulla or Srinagar for specialised care,” he said. CMO Baramulla, BMO Uri, and other hospital officials were also present on the occasion.
