UK braced for Arctic blast with weather maps showing sub-zero temperatures

by · BristolLive

The UK could be braced for freezing weather as a 30-hour-long Arctic blast is set to bring snow, rain and sub-zero temperatures. New weather maps from WX Charts have outlined those areas that are in for a particularly frosty spell starting the evening of November 6, continuing straight through until midnight on November 8.

Some spots could see the mercury plummet to -2C, with conditions getting progressively colder. Scotland, Wales, and Devon are all on the list to experience the icy weather, but northwest Scotland is expected to get the worst of it, potentially facing a continual snow dump of "2cm every hour."

Towns like Wick, Inverness, and Aberdeen are directly in the path of the wintery onslaught, reports the Mirror. It comes as several UK towns were warned to prepare for a 150-mile-long snow blast as early as the Halloween weekend.

Residents in northwest Scotland may wake up to snowy scenes in places such as Talmine, Tongue, and Mallaig, amongst others. Even Wales isn't spared, as wind chill factors could see Ceredigion temperatures nosedive to -4C. And it's not alone; Herefordshire, Lincolnshire, and Cumbria are also in for a cold shock.

Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park might top the charts with temperatures sinking to -10C. All this frigid air arrives courtesy of a jet stream straight from the Arctic, exacerbating the UK's already unpredictable weather patterns.

The Met Office's long-range weather forecast from October 29 to November 7 predicts the arrival of frost and fog, which may be slow to clear. Breezier conditions and outbreaks of rain are expected to hit the far north and northwest, with potential to spread farther south later in the week.

The forecaster said this will allow "some colder air to filter into parts of Scotland with perhaps some snow over high ground", adding: "Otherwise, high pressure will tend to dominate for much of the rest of this period across more southern, and perhaps central, areas, with a continuation of drier than average conditions likely."

The BBC's Weather team weighed in on November's snow prospects, saying: "Friday's outlook may provide a little more clarity regarding the patterns that will prevail at from the beginning of November. At present, the long-range weather prediction models are still showing conflicting trends."

They added: "Conditions are likely to turn more unsettled and windy for the rest of this week, with temperatures dropping sharply. The outlook for next week has become milder and a bit calmer, with occasional dry spells, although there is still a risk of colder conditions breaking through at some point later next week or so."
