Exact temperature your home should be to avoid 'frozen pipes' as UK braces for snow

by · BristolLive

With snow forecasted for parts of the UK this week, many homeowners may find themselves unprepared for the impending freeze. To prevent damage during the colder months, it's crucial to get homes winter-ready in advance.

The drop in temperature can lead to frozen and cracked pipes, causing extensive harm to plumbing and heating systems. While a quick internet search might offer DIY solutions, experts from Yell advise against trying to thaw pipes on your own due to the risk of causing bursts – it's wiser to seek professional help.

However, there are straightforward measures to avoid such issues. David Doran, a plumbing specialist at Blackstone Plumbing and Heating Ltd, suggests ensuring your thermostat is set correctly.

Rather than turning up the heat on particularly cold days, he advises maintaining a temperature between 18 and 20°C. Keeping the thermostat at a minimum of 18 degrees will help keep the pipes warm and prevent them from freezing.

Many modern heating systems come with a "frost protection" setting that maintains a house above freezing temperatures while conserving energy. If you're away during the winter or looking to reduce heating usage, it's important not to switch off the heating completely, reports the Express.

It's advised to reduce the temperature to approximately 15-17°C (59-63°F) when you're asleep or out of the house. This not only conserves energy but also stops the house from becoming excessively cold.

You could also set regular heating periods throughout the day to keep pipes warm and minimise the risk of them freezing. Moreover, regular boiler servicing is crucial for maintaining its optimal performance and ensuring consistent heating in your home.

David suggests an annual boiler service for safe and efficient operation. Regular checks can detect leaks, blockages, and ensure the safety of devices, thus preventing potential gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning.

It also enhances efficiency and helps save on energy bills. Many warranties and insurance policies also necessitate annual servicing.
