After taking a look at the sub 4m SUV sales and sub 4.5m SUV sales, let us now take a look at the 4.5m to 4.8m SUV segment sales. Mahindra continued its strong hold over the 4.5m to 4.8m SUV segment in May 2026, accounting for more than three-fourths of total sales in the category. Combined sales of SUVs in this segment stood at 39,698 units, registering a healthy 29.27% growth over 30,709 units sold in May 2025.

Leading the charts was Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio N with sales of 15,774 units. The SUV posted 9.53% YoY growth over 14,401 units sold in May last year and commanded a dominant 39.73% share of the segment. Mahindra XUV7XO secured second position with 9,338 units, recording 45.11% growth compared to 6,435 units sold a year ago. The SUV accounted for 23.52% of segment sales.

4.5m to 4.8m SUV Sales May 2026 – YoY

Mahindra’s electric offerings also contributed significantly. XEV 9S registered 3,502 units, while XEV 9e added another 1,939 units. Combined, Mahindra sold 30,553 units across its five SUVs in this category, capturing nearly 77% market share. Toyota Fortuner remained the best-selling non-Mahindra SUV in the segment with 2,905 units, up 12.99% from 2,571 units sold in May 2025.

Tata Harrier and Harrier EV emerged as one of the fastest-growing models, recording sales of 2,815 units. Compared to 894 units sold last year, Harrier registered a massive 214.88% YoY growth, likely aided by the addition of Harrier EV. Tata Safari reported sales of 1,057 units, down 4.69% from 1,109 units sold in May 2025.

MG Hector and Hector Plus posted relatively stable performance with sales of 1,102 units, marginally higher than 1,098 units sold a year ago. Hyundai Alcazar registered sales of 814 units, witnessing an 11.71% decline compared to 922 units sold in May 2025. Among premium SUVs, Skoda Kodiaq recorded 146 units while Jeep Compass and Meridian posted sales of 118 units and 88 units respectively.

MoM Growth Driven By Scorpio, Fortuner

Compared to April 2026, segment sales increased by 7.14%, rising from 37,054 units to 39,698 units. Scorpio added 1,055 units month-on-month, while Toyota Fortuner recorded one of the strongest gains with a 28.94% increase. Tata Harrier also improved by 10.61%, aided by continued demand for Harrier EV.

Among EVs, Mahindra XEV 9e grew 20.36% MoM while XEV 9S posted an 8.02% increase. On the other hand, Tata Safari declined by 27.95%, MG Hector fell 15.03%, while Volkswagen Tayron dropped 41.38% compared to April 2026. With Scorpio continuing its dominance and Mahindra’s expanding EV lineup adding substantial volumes, the company remains the undisputed leader in the 4.5m to 4.8m SUV segment.

OEM Wise Performance

Mahindra continued to dominate the 4.5m-4.8m SUV segment in May 2026, accounting for nearly 77% of total sales with 30,553 units, driven by strong demand for Scorpio, XUV7XO and its growing EV portfolio. Tata Motors emerged as the fastest-growing mainstream OEM, posting 93% YoY growth thanks to Harrier and Harrier EV. Toyota maintained steady momentum with Fortuner, while MG sales remained largely flat. Hyundai, Skoda and Jeep recorded declines, reflecting increased competition in the segment. Volkswagen posted strong percentage growth with the addition of Tayron, although overall volumes remained limited.
