New VinFast VF 5 Spied In Bengaluru – Small Electric SUV
by Satya Singh · RushLaneTargeting high-volume segments could be part of VinFast’s long-term goal of achieving global production of 1 million units per year by 2030
After launching VF 6 and VF 7 and later adding VF MPV 7, VinFast now appears to be focusing on the sub-4-meter segment. While this space is dominated by ICE cars, there are some good electric options such as Tata Punch EV, Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV. VinFast is expected to mark its entry into this space with the VF 5, which has commenced road testing. Latest spy shots are from Bengaluru, revealing the SUV’s exterior profile.
VinFast VF 5 – Design and features
This specific model of VF 5 being tested in India is the second-gen version. While the first-gen model is available for sale in multiple markets, the second-gen version has not been introduced anywhere. The second-gen VF 5 has received significant updates across its exterior and interior, as revealed in the spy shots. If the VF 5 gets a high level of localization in India, it could be introduced here at a competitive price point.
As compared to the hatchback-inspired styling of the VF 5 sold overseas, the second-gen model has acquired a more rugged, SUV-like stance. This can be seen with the changes across the front and rear. The test mule has a more upright fascia and a flatter bonnet. There appears to be a prominent closed-off grille, lower mounted headlamps and top-mounted full width LED DRLs. A wide bumper section with horizontal slats is noticeable.
On the side, the panelling appears sharper in comparison to the curvaceous styling of the model sold overseas. Some features have been retained such as the circular wheel arches, body cladding in black and conventional door handles. Test mules spotted in recent weeks are from the lower trims, as evident with the steel wheels.
At the rear, key features include a raked windshield, roof mounted spoiler and a chunky bumper. VF 5 has distinctive tail lamps, which are likely to feature a connected setup. Dimensionally, the VF 5 sold globally is 3,967 mm long, 1,723 mm wide and 1,579 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,514 mm. A comprehensive range of safety features are available including ADAS.
Interior, performance
Earlier spy shots had revealed a refreshed interior, featuring a contemporary aesthetic and premium equipment such as a large freestanding touchscreen infotainment system. Other key features include a new dashboard, a sporty 2-spoke steering wheel and updated centre console and control panel. The new second-gen VF 5 could get features like a sunroof, ventilated seats, a TFT instrument cluster and rear AC vents.
It is not known if the powertrain options will also be updated. The current VF 5 sold globally is offered with battery pack options of 29.6 kWh and 37.23 kWh. A single front mounted electric motor is used, which generates 134 hp and 135 Nm. With the larger battery pack, range is 326.4 km (NEDC standard). VF 5 can achieve 10% to 70% charge in 33 minutes with a fast charger.
