New Suzuki Engine

Suzuki’s engine roadmap includes a larger four-cylinder turbo alongside the previously detailed 1.2L unit, with E100 and CNG/CBG fuel options

Following details of Suzuki’s new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, another development has emerged from its Technology Strategy Briefing 2026 in Japan. Suzuki is also developing a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine, with output listed at 118 kW (158 bhp / 160 PS) and 280 Nm.

New 1.5L Turbo Joins 1.2L DITC Programme

The larger engine sits alongside the 1.2-litre three-cylinder DITC unit detailed in our earlier report. While the smaller engine is listed with 93 kW (125 bhp) and 230 Nm, the 1.5-litre version offers an additional 25 kW (33 bhp) and 50 Nm.

Japanese automotive journalist Kota Sera shared a post that states that the larger engine is being developed with D-segment applications in mind. This suggests Suzuki’s new turbo programme extends beyond small cars and compact crossovers.

Could Suit Grand Vitara And Larger SUVs

For Maruti Suzuki, a 160 PS turbo petrol engine could create a stronger performance option in its SUV lineup. Vehicles in the Grand Vitara size class, or a possible future three-row derivative, provide relevant examples of where additional power and torque could be useful.

The Grand Vitara’s existing 1.5-litre petrol produces approximately 103 PS, so the new turbo engine could deliver a substantial performance boost if introduced. Its approximately 160 PS output would also bring it closer to the more powerful offerings in the segment like Creta, Seltos, Duster, Tekton, Sierra, Kushaq, Taigun, etc.

Suzuki’s parallel focus on lightweight engineering could further improve both performance and fuel efficiency. While its roughly 100 kg weight-saving programme concerns future car development, any related measures adopted in larger SUVs could improve power-to-weight ratios and reduce fuel consumption.

E100, CNG And CBG In Development Plans

The roadmap lists fuel options extending up to E100, alongside CNG and compressed biogas, for both engine sizes. This makes the programme relevant to markets pursuing ethanol and alternative gaseous fuels, including India. For Maruti Suzuki, such flexibility could support a broader range of products, combining stronger performance with alternative-fuel choices.

Over 40% Efficiency by 2030, Over 50% by 2035

The slide provides a clearer picture of Suzuki’s efficiency ambitions. The engines shown at the 2030 milestone target thermal efficiency exceeding 40%, supported by technologies including the Miller cycle, a high compression ratio, high-energy ignition, faster combustion, low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation and variable-geometry turbocharging.

A later phase around 2035 aims to exceed 50% thermal efficiency. This includes dedicated hybrid-engine development, lean combustion, pre-chamber ignition, waste-heat recovery and reductions in mechanical losses.

More Powerful, Efficient And Lighter Maruti Cars Ahead

Suzuki’s technology showcase points towards a broader transformation of its future lineup. Developments detailed so far include new 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre turbo engines, affordable 48V hybrids, series hybrids and plug-in systems delivering up to approximately 174 bhp. Alongside these, Suzuki is pursuing E100 and CNG/CBG applications, lighter vehicle structures and substantially lighter CNG cylinders.

For Maruti Suzuki, these technologies could eventually support more efficient small cars and more powerful SUVs, while retaining a focus on affordability. India-specific model applications and launch schedules will determine how this roadmap reaches buyers.
