Kia Sonet Hybrid, Carens Hybrid Planned For India Launch By 2029
by Sagar Patel · RushLaneKia has revealed an extensive mid-to-long-term roadmap for India, outlining plans for new electric vehicles, hybrids, CNG models, next-generation products and a major expansion of its dealer network. By 2030, Kia is targeting annual sales of around 4.10 lakh units in India along with a market share of 7.6%.
The roadmap is particularly significant as Kia plans to have eight electrified (Pure EV + Hybrid EV) models in its portfolio by the end of the decade. Beyond premium electrified models, hybrid technology will gradually make its way to Kia’s core volume products including Seltos, Sonet and Carens.
Kia’s India business is already showing strong volumes in 2026. From January to July 2026, the company registered cumulative sales of around 1.91 lakh units. The next few years will see Kia expand its portfolio across ICE, CNG, hybrid and electric powertrains.
Kia Sorento Hybrid Launch On 4th September
Kia’s electrification push has already gathered pace with Syros EV now launched and deliveries underway. The next addition will be Kia Sorento Hybrid, which is planned for launch on 4th September 2026.
Sorento will give Kia a hybrid SUV offering positioned higher up the portfolio. It will subsequently be joined by Carnival Hybrid, which is planned ahead of the festive season. Kia is therefore adopting a multi-powertrain strategy rather than moving exclusively towards EVs. Alongside hybrids and EVs, the company is also preparing a factory-fitted CNG option for Carens, which is expected to arrive sometime next month.
Seltos Hybrid Expected in 2027
Kia Seltos Hybrid is expected sometime in 2027, giving the SUV an electrified alternative alongside conventional powertrain options. Hybrid technology will subsequently spread across Kia’s other volume models. The presentation specifically confirms Sonet Hybrid, Carens Hybrid and Seltos Hybrid as part of the company’s electrified product roadmap.
New-gen Kia Sonet is expected to make its debut sometime in 2027 with conventional ICE powertrains initially. Its hybrid version is planned by 2029. This staggered rollout should allow Kia to introduce the new generation first and subsequently broaden its powertrain portfolio.
Next-Gen Carens To Get ICE, Hybrid And EV
Carens will have an equally interesting evolution. Kia Carens was first launched in India in 2022 and its next major generational change is expected towards the end of the decade.
By 2029, next-gen Carens is expected to offer ICE and hybrid powertrains, while Kia will also continue with an electric Carens offering. This would effectively give the Carens family one of the widest powertrain portfolios in Kia’s India range.
This strategy also makes sense considering the importance of Carens to Kia. Instead of using electrification to replace conventional powertrains outright, Kia appears to be preparing multiple choices depending on customer requirements and market conditions.
Another Made-In-India Small Electric SUV Coming
Another interesting model shown in Kia’s roadmap is a locally produced small electric SUV planned by 2029. Kia’s presentation identifies an additional locally developed EV, although its final production identity has not been disclosed.
There is an interesting possibility regarding this model. Hyundai is working on a Made-in-India sub-4-metre electric SUV, currently expected to launch around October 2026. Considering the extensive platform and product synergies between Hyundai and Kia, Kia’s future small EV could potentially share its underpinnings with this upcoming Hyundai.
Such a strategy would not be unusual. Hyundai and Kia already have closely related products across multiple segments, with Venue and Sonet occupying the sub-4m SUV space and Creta and Seltos competing in the mid-SUV segment. However, a connection between the upcoming Hyundai EV and Kia’s future small EV has not been officially confirmed at this stage.
Kia Targets 4.10 Lakh Sales By 2030
Kia sold around 2.80 lakh vehicles in India during 2025, according to its presentation, translating to a market share of around 6.3%. By 2030, the company is targeting annual volumes of 4.10 lakh units and a market share of approximately 7.6%. This represents an increase of around 1.30 lakh annual units over 2025 levels.
Kia’s electrified portfolio will be an important part of achieving this target, with the company planning to eventually have eight electrified models covering EVs and hybrids. India itself is expected to become a significantly larger automotive market. Industry volumes are projected to increase from around 4.5 million units in 2025 to 5.4 million units by 2030.
Dealer Network To Expand To 800 Outlets
Kia is also preparing its retail and after-sales operations for the expected volume growth. Its Indian dealer network increased from just 166 outlets in 2019 to 540 in 2025. By 2030, Kia plans to have 800 outlets across India. Expansion will be based on regional demand, accessibility and growth potential. Kia also intends to expand certified pre-owned outlets while improving service capabilities through remote diagnostics and proactive vehicle inspections.
Overall, Kia’s roadmap points towards a diversified strategy for India rather than a complete transition towards a single powertrain technology. ICE models will continue, CNG is being added to Carens, hybrids will expand rapidly from premium products to Seltos, Sonet and Carens, while locally manufactured EVs will form another important pillar. The next three to four years could therefore result in one of the biggest expansions of Kia’s India portfolio since the brand entered the market.
