Thar, Fortuner Owners Take Road Safety Pledge

Mahindra Thar and Toyota Fortuner owners came together for an unusual road safety initiative in Daman. Called the ‘Thar-Fortuner Sankalp Yatra’, the campaign focused specifically on drivers of the two popular SUVs, encouraging responsible behaviour and greater discipline on public roads.

The initiative was organised with the involvement of the Daman administration, with the District Collector administering a road safety pledge to participating Thar and Fortuner owners. A convoy of the SUVs was also part of the awareness programme.

‘Raftaar Nahi, Sanskaar’

Rather than relying only on conventional road safety messaging, the campaign uses phrases that directly address the image often associated with large SUVs. One of the prominent messages at the event was ‘Raftaar Nahi, Sanskaar’, shifting the emphasis from speed to responsible behaviour.

Another message, ‘Bhaigiri Nahi – Zimmedari!’, was used to highlight that owning a powerful or aspirational SUV should not translate into aggressive behaviour on public roads. Placards carried by participants also included messages such as ‘Bhaigiri cool nahi hai’.

Videos from the event show a sizeable gathering of Thar and Fortuner vehicles. Owners can be seen participating in the pledge and holding road safety placards before the drive.

The broader message of the initiative was that pride in owning such vehicles should be accompanied by responsibility towards other road users. Another line used during the campaign was ‘Shaan ke saath saath suraksha ka bhi rakhna hai dhyan’, essentially asking owners to give safety the same importance as the pride associated with their vehicles.

The choice of Thar and Fortuner for a dedicated campaign makes the initiative stand out from regular road safety programmes. Both SUVs have a strong road presence and an aspirational following, and the campaign appears to be using that popularity to communicate its road discipline message.

The official Department of Information & Publicity, Daman, also shared visuals of Thar and Fortuner owners participating in the Sankalp Yatra and taking the road safety pledge administered by the District Collector.

Using SUV Popularity For Road Safety Awareness

Road safety campaigns commonly focus on speeding, helmets, seat belts, drunk driving and traffic-rule compliance. The Daman initiative takes a more targeted approach by bringing owners of specific popular SUVs together and making them part of the awareness campaign.

The event’s messaging ultimately revolves around a straightforward point – the capabilities, size or image of a vehicle do not provide an exemption from responsible driving. By involving Thar and Fortuner owners themselves, the Thar-Fortuner Sankalp Yatra attempts to turn the popularity and road presence of these SUVs into a platform for promoting safer behaviour.
