Bajaj Chetak C25 Registered As Moped In Brazil – Launch Soon

Already available in India, Chetak C25 is positioned as an accessible and practical electric scooter for everyday needs

As part of its plans to strengthen its presence in Brazil, Bajaj is planning to introduce the mass market Chetak C25 electric scooter. This is evident from a design patent for the scooter filed recently with INPI (Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property). While an official launch timeline is not available, Bajaj had earlier mentioned that it will step up focus on the Brazilian market. Chetak is already exported to markets like Sri Lanka, Philippines and Nepal.

Classification of a two-wheeler as an electric moped in Brazil is based on the specifications. For context, output of the electric motor should be below 4,000 watts to qualify as an electric moped. Similarly, an electric moped also needs to have its top speed equal to or less than 50 km/h. Chetak C25 meets the wattage requirement, as it generates 2,200 watts.

While Chetak C25 in India has a top speed of 60 km/h, it can be easily reduced electronically to comply with moped specifications in Brazil. Design patent filed in Brazil for Chetak C25 reveals that the scooter is largely the same as the model sold in India. Key features include retro-style headlamp, handlebar mounted turn indicators, a dual-tone front apron and ice cube tail light.

Chetak has curvy body panelling all across, which enhances its retro aesthetic. Other key highlights include a long and comfortable seat and a single piece grab rail. The scooter has a sizeable flat floorboard, which can come in handy for various tasks. Chetak C25 is preferred for its all-metal body, neo-retro design, exciting colour options and youthful graphics. Tech kit includes a colour LCD display with access for calls and music.

Chetak C25 is equipped with a 2.5 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 113 km. Charging time is pretty fast, with 0 to 80% achievable in 2 hours 25 minutes. The scooter has ride modes of Eco and Sports and a reverse mode for added convenience. A 25-litre underseat storage space has been provided for small to medium sized items. Braking setup uses a disc-drum combo. Features like Guide Me Home Lights are available with the optional TecPac software package.

Chetak to challenge Yamaha NEO’s

When launched, Chetak C25 will primarily rival Yamaha NEO’s in Brazil. The latter is available in both scooter and moped configurations in Brazil. The moped utilizes a 2.4 kW electric motor installed directly on the rear wheel. Max torque output is 135.3 Nm. Top speed of Yamaha NEO’s is electronically limited to 45 km/h.

Two lithium-ion battery packs have been used for NEO’s, each weighing 8 kg. These are installed under the seat. Rated voltage is 50.4 volts (V) and a maximum capacity of 23.2 Ampere-hours (Ah). Yamaha NEO’s delivers 39 km of range with a single battery and 71 km with dual battery packs. It comes with a 180 watt charger.

Yamaha NEO’s is available at a starting price of BRL 25,590 (Rs 4.77 lakh). It is likely that Chetak C25 will be available at a more accessible price point in Brazil. In India, Chetak C25 is currently available at a starting price of Rs 95,802.
