New Toyota Hilux ANCAP Crash Safety Rating

Prior to acing ANCAP, the Toyota Hilux had received a 5-star rating in Latin NCAP and ASEAN NCAP as well

Toyota Hilux not only looks formidable, but has also proven itself in multiple NCAP safety assessment tests. Latest results are from ANCAP, where the Hilux has received good scores across all safety assessment tests. The ANCAP safety rating is applicable for all variants of Hilux in Australia, excluding only the Hilux Rugged X variant. Let’s check out the details.

Toyota Hilux standard safety features (Australia and New Zealand)

Toyota launched the Hilux in New Zealand in November this year and in Australia in December. Standard safety features include dual front and side airbags and a driver knee airbag. A centre airbag is also installed to ensure enhanced protection for front seat occupants.

Other standard safety features include autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK). Hilux also has an advanced speed assistance system (SAS), capable of recognizing speed signs.

Toyota Hilux ANCAP – Adult Occupant Protection

In Adult Occupant Protection, Toyota Hilux has scored 33.96 out of 40 points, which is 84%. In the frontal offset (MPDB) test, protection to most body parts of both the driver and front passenger was rated either Good or Adequate. Next, in the side impact test, protection for all critical body parts of the driver was rated as Good.

Oblique pole test revealed the driver’s chest had Adequate protection, whereas protection for other critical body parts was rated as Good. The centre airbag offered in Hilux played a key role in preventing occupant-to-occupant interactions in the side impact tests. Protection to the head of both front occupants was found to be Good.

In side impact tests, the safety systems onboard Hilux were able to prevent movement of occupants to the other side of the vehicle. Protection was found to be Adequate in these scenarios. Eight points were deducted since the front structure of Hilux was identified as a risk for the occupants of an oncoming vehicle (MPDB test).

Child Occupant Protection

In Child Occupant Protection, Toyota Hilux scored 44.00 out of 49 points, which is 89%. Protection for the 6-year and 10-year dummies was found to be Good in frontal offset and side impact tests. However, ANCAP has noted the unavailability of a top tether anchorage in the rear centre seating position. Hence, installation of child restraints in this seating position is not recommended. These findings are applicable to both dual cab and single cab Hilux variants.

Hilux has a direct child presence detection (CPD) system, which is installed on all rear seats as standard in the dual cab variants. However, the single cab variant misses out on this feature. Hilux dual cab received full points for easy installation and compatibility with most of the commonly available child restraints in Australia and New Zealand.

However, areas near the front edge of the bonnet and the stiff windscreen pillars showed Poor protection.

Protection to the femurs, pelvis and lower legs of the pedestrian was found to be Good. Testing of the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system of Hilux showed Good protection for the pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist. Hilux also aced the cyclist anti-dooring test.

In Safety Assist, Hilux scored 14.83 out of 18 points, which is 82%. Good performance was noted in tests for the AEB (Car-to-Car), AEB Crossing and AEB Head-On. Good results were also noted for lane support system, speed assistance system, intelligent adaptive cruise control, seatbelt reminder with occupancy detection and driver drowsiness detection.
