Hyundai Genesis GV90 eSUV Debuts – World’s First Roof Airbag, 25 Speakers, 123 kWh Battery
by Sagar Patel · RushLaneGenesis has unveiled GV90, its largest and most luxurious SUV yet. Positioned as the new flagship of Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury brand, Genesis GV90 is a full-size electric SUV aimed at the upper end of the luxury SUV market, where models such as Range Rover, Mercedes-Maybach GLS and Rolls-Royce Cullinan operate.
Production-spec GV90 is based on Neolun Concept unveiled in 2024. Interestingly, some of the concept’s most ambitious features have made it to production, including its Rolls-Royce-style coach doors without a conventional fixed B-pillar.
Genesis GV90 Neolun – Coach Doors Make Production
GV90 will be available in standard and more luxurious Neolun versions. While standard GV90 uses conventional doors, GV90 Neolun gets what Genesis calls Neolun Arch Gate.
Front and rear doors open in opposite directions, creating a wide opening for passengers. There’s no conventional fixed B-pillar between them. Genesis claims it is the world’s first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach-door arrangement.
For structural strength, high-strength dual steel beams are integrated into the doors. There’s also a concealed roll-cage structure with a frame claimed to be 1.5 times thicker than conventional vehicles. Adding to the lounge-like experience are motorised front seats that can rotate 180 degrees when GV90 is parked. This allows front occupants to sit facing passengers in the second row.
Largest Hyundai Motor Group EV Battery Yet
Genesis GV90 debuts a new eMP electric platform developed specifically for the flagship. It measures 5,285 mm long, 2,030 mm wide and has a massive 3,245 mm wheelbase. Depending on the wheel specification, height ranges from 1,815 mm to 1,825 mm. For perspective, GV90 is 225 mm longer than Hyundai Ioniq 9, while its wheelbase is longer by 115 mm.
Power comes from two electric motors. Front motor produces 240 kW and 350 Nm, whereas rear motor develops 250 kW and 450 Nm. Combined output stands at 490 kW (657 bhp) and 800 Nm, with power going to all four wheels. GV90 also gets electronic limited-slip differentials at both axles, multi-chamber air suspension, electronically controlled dampers and rear-wheel steering.
A 123.5 kWh battery is used, the largest yet on a Hyundai Motor Group EV. Genesis estimates around 500 km range for the seven-seat version based on its internal testing. With a 350 kW DC fast charger, 10-80% charging takes a claimed 22 minutes.
Luxury Interior With Pop-Up Cinema Screen
Technology is another major focus. A 23.6-inch OLED Cinematic Display combines instrumentation and infotainment functions. When the vehicle is parked, the screen can rise by 90 mm to become a larger 24.6-inch entertainment display.
Other highlights include a 25-inch head-up display, Pleos Connect infotainment, generative AI assistant, 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premier 3D sound system with Dolby Atmos and massage seats. Genesis has also focused heavily on cabin isolation, using acoustic glass measuring more than 5 mm thick across the windows and extensive sound-deadening materials.
Four-Seat Executive Suite Takes On Ultra-Luxury SUVs
At the top of the range is GV90 Neolun Executive Suite with a four-seat configuration. This version is more directly positioned towards chauffeur-driven ultra-luxury SUV buyers. Smart Vision Roof uses PDLC technology to independently alter transparency across six zones. A limited GV90 Neolun First Edition adds more exclusive exterior and interior finishes.
Second row gets real wood veneer flooring with radiant heating inspired by traditional Korean ondol underfloor heating. There’s also a refrigerator, integrated tables, semi-aniline leather upholstery and a partition separating the passenger compartment from the boot.
World’s First Roof Airbag
GV90 gets 12 airbags, including what Genesis claims is the world’s first Roof Airbag. During a severe rollover, it deploys across the fixed glass roof to help protect occupants.
Curtain airbags extend all the way to the third row, while additional airbags integrated into the seat cushions are designed to reduce submarining during an accident. Genesis has also strengthened battery protection and introduced Thermal Runaway Protection technology.
Genesis Coming To India In 2027
GV90’s unveiling comes at an interesting time for the Indian luxury car market. Hyundai India has confirmed that Genesis will enter India in 2027, marking the Korean luxury brand’s official arrival in the country.
Genesis has not announced its India product portfolio yet. However, GV80 SUV and GV80 Coupe-SUV are likely to be among the first models considered for India. These would allow Genesis to compete in one of the most important segments of India’s luxury vehicle market currently dominated by Mercedes and BMW.
Whether the much larger and considerably more expensive GV90 will eventually make its way to India remains to be seen. However, as the new technological and luxury flagship of Genesis, GV90 gives Indian buyers an early look at what the brand is capable of ahead of its planned 2027 entry.
