Car Retail Sales Aug 2026 – Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Skoda VW, MG, Honda, Renault
by Nabanita Singha Roy · RushLaneCar retail sales recorded a strong year-on-year performance in August 2026, with sales crossing the 4 lakh mark. According to FADA retail data, 4,02,398 passenger vehicles were registered during the month, compared to 3,46,468 units in August 2025.
This represents YoY growth of 16.14%, with an additional 55,930 vehicles sold. FADA notes that this is the first time passenger vehicle retail sales have crossed 4 lakh units during August. However, compared to July 2026, when 4,16,555 units were registered, sales declined 3.40%.
Car Retail Sales Aug 2026
Maruti Suzuki remained comfortably at the top with retail sales of 1,65,200 units. Sales increased 22.83% YoY from 1,34,494 units, while market share improved from 38.82% to 41.05%. On a MoM basis, Maruti was also among the few major manufacturers to grow, up 2.06%.
Tata Motors ranked second with 57,841 units, registering a strong 40.49% YoY increase from 41,170 units. Its market share expanded substantially from 11.88% to 14.37%. Compared to July, however, Tata sales declined marginally by 1.59%. Mahindra occupied third position with 50,245 units, up 6.41% YoY. Its market share declined from 13.63% to 12.49%. Hyundai followed with 46,987 units, registering 4.84% YoY growth and securing an 11.68% share.
Toyota Declines, Kia Records Growth
Toyota registered 24,856 units in August, down 9.94% from 27,600 units a year ago. Its market share consequently fell from 7.97% to 6.18%. Toyota also recorded a relatively sharp 15.58% MoM decline. Kia was close behind at 23,371 units, representing 17.60% YoY growth. Its market share was 5.81%. The gap between Toyota and Kia in August retail sales stood at just 1,485 units.
Skoda Volkswagen Group registered 7,469 units, down 17.64% YoY, while JSW MG Motor sales declined 13.01% to 5,784 units. Honda Cars India performed better, with 4,968 registrations representing 12.37% growth.
Renault sales increased 25.10% to 3,275 units, while Nissan recorded one of the strongest percentage gains among established brands. Nissan sales rose 83.62% YoY to 2,758 units from 1,502 units. VinFast registered 2,199 vehicles during August 2026, compared to 1,482 units in July, translating to 48.38% MoM growth.
Most Brands Decline MoM
Despite the strong YoY numbers, August was weaker than July for most manufacturers. Apart from Maruti, Nissan and VinFast, nearly every major brand in the list posted a MoM decline. Mahindra fell 10.63%, Kia 8.53%, Skoda VW 9.15%, Honda 14.67% and JSW MG 17.72%. Among luxury brands, BMW declined 17.63% MoM while Mercedes fell 11.39%.
CNG And Hybrid Share Continues To Rise
The fuel-wise retail data reveals a continuing shift in the passenger vehicle market. Petrol/ethanol vehicles accounted for 40.85% of August sales, down substantially from 46.37% in August 2025. Diesel share also declined from 18.37% to 17.21%. CNG/LPG emerged stronger, increasing from 21.47% last year to 25.28% in August 2026. Hybrid share increased from 7.96% to 9.04%, while EVs accounted for 7.63%, compared to 5.83% a year ago.
Combined, CNG/LPG, hybrids and EVs accounted for nearly 42% of passenger vehicle retail sales in August 2026. While overall PV retail crossed a major August milestone, the fuel mix indicates that alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles are steadily gaining a larger share of the Indian car market.
