Hyundai i20 Sales Cross 15 Lakh In India – 18 Years Since Launch
by Pearl Daniels · RushLaneHyundai i20 has crossed the 15 lakh cumulative sales milestone in India. Launched back in 2008, i20 has spent close to two decades in the Indian market and has evolved through three generations. It remains one of Hyundai’s longest-running nameplates in the country.
The milestone comes at an interesting time for the hatchback segment. SUVs now account for a much larger portion of India’s passenger vehicle market, while premium hatchbacks have seen their volumes shrink from their earlier highs. Despite this shift, i20 continues to remain an important part of Hyundai’s India portfolio.
Hyundai i20 – 15 Lakh Sales Since 2008
When i20 arrived in 2008, it was positioned as a more premium hatchback and eventually took over the space occupied by Getz. Over subsequent generations, Hyundai progressively added features, larger screens, connected technology and more safety equipment.
Currently, i20 is in its third generation in India. The range has also expanded beyond the standard hatchback with i20 N Line providing a sportier alternative. Hyundai additionally offers special editions such as i20 Knight Edition. Price ranges from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 11.74 lakh, ex-sh.
Crossing 15 lakh sales means Hyundai has averaged more than 83,000 i20 sales annually over its approximately 18-year presence in India. However, sales have naturally varied considerably across generations and changing market conditions.
Current i20 – Petrol Only
Current Hyundai i20 is offered with a 1.2-litre Kappa naturally aspirated petrol engine. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and IVT automatic. For buyers wanting more performance, Hyundai offers i20 N Line with a 1.0-litre turbo GDi petrol engine. It is available with a 6-speed manual as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Equipment includes six airbags as standard, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation system, electric sunroof, wireless charger and more than 60 connected-car features through Hyundai Bluelink. Other features include ESC, Hill Start Assist, Bose 7-speaker audio, dashcam and TPMS.
Premium Hatchback Market Has Changed
i20’s journey also reflects the changing preferences of Indian car buyers. Premium hatchbacks once occupied an important middle ground between entry-level small cars and sedans. In recent years, compact SUVs have increasingly taken over that space.
Hyundai itself now has Venue positioned in the sub-4 metre SUV segment, while Exter caters to buyers at a lower price point. Despite these internal and external alternatives, Hyundai has continued with i20 and expanded its appeal through N Line and special editions.
Next-Gen Hyundai i20 Already Revealed
While current Hyundai i20 has crossed the 15 lakh sales milestone in India, the nameplate was the star-car at the recent FIFA World Cup Finals in the US. That is because the next-generation i20 has been launched in Brazil, bringing a significantly refreshed design along with updates to the cabin, technology and features.
The new-generation model also highlights the importance Hyundai continues to place on the i20 nameplate. Hyundai has not announced an India launch timeline for the new-generation i20 yet. However, considering India has historically been an important market for i20, the new model could eventually make its way here as a replacement for the current-generation hatchback.
