Electric Car Sales Aug 2026 – Tata, Mahindra, MG, VinFast, Maruti, Hyundai, Kia, BYD, BMW

A total of 30,696 electric cars were registered during the month, compared to 20,210 units in August 2025. This represents a strong 51.89% YoY growth, adding 10,486 units over last year.
However, EV sales were lower on a sequential basis. July 2026 registrations stood at 32,928 units, resulting in a 6.78% MoM decline in August. EV penetration in the overall car market also eased marginally from 7.90% in July to 7.63% in August 2026. Despite this, EV share remains considerably higher than 5.83% recorded in August 2025.
Electric Car Sales Aug 2026
Tata Motors retained a commanding lead in India’s electric car market with 13,158 units registered in August. This was a significant 63.17% increase over 8,064 units registered last year. Sequentially, however, Tata registrations declined 3.80% from 13,678 units in July. Tata accounted for 42.87% of electric car registrations in August, meaning more than four out of every ten EVs registered during the month came from the company.
Mahindra remained in second position with 6,464 units. Sales increased 56.17% YoY from 4,139 units, although registrations declined 16.51% from 7,742 units in July. Mahindra held a 21.06% share of the EV market. Together, Tata and Mahindra accounted for nearly 64% of India’s electric car registrations during August.
MG Sales Decline, VinFast Climbs To Fourth
JSW MG Motor was third with 4,622 registrations. Unlike Tata and Mahindra, MG recorded a YoY decline, with sales falling 17.77% from 5,621 units. MoM performance was also weaker, down 18.76% from 5,689 units in July. MG’s August EV market share stood at 15.06%.
One of the notable performers was VinFast, which registered 2,199 units and moved into fourth position, up 48.38% MoM. The sales growth comes after VinFast earlier this month denied reports that it had paused its India expansion plans, reiterating its commitment to the Indian market. Maruti followed with 1,412 EV registrations, accounting for 4.60% market share. Sales declined 11.75% MoM from 1,600 units in July.
Hyundai, Kia Record Strong MoM Growth
Hyundai registered 803 electric cars, representing growth of 17.06% YoY and a stronger 41.87% MoM improvement. Its EV market share stood at 2.62%. Hyundai is all set to enter the compact EV SUV segment later this year, with their made in India electric SUV. This is expected to deliver a huge boost to Hyundai EV sales in India.
With the launch of new Syros EV, Kia has registered sales of 645 units, up 28.74% YoY and 37.23% MoM. BYD registered 543 units, down 6.54% YoY and 27.50% MoM. BMW recorded 274 units, followed by Toyota at 161 units, Tesla at 116 units and Mercedes-Benz at 114 units. Citroen and Volvo registered 44 and 33 electric cars, respectively.
EV Share Rises Sharply YoY
While August EV registrations declined from July, the longer-term trend remains positive. EVs accounted for 7.63% of car retail sales, compared to only 5.83% a year ago – an improvement of 1.80 percentage points. The broader shift away from conventional fuels is even more significant. In August 2026, petrol/ethanol vehicles accounted for 40.85% of car retail, while CNG/LPG reached 25.28%, diesel stood at 17.21%, hybrids at 9.04% and EVs at 7.63%.
CNG/LPG, hybrids and EVs together accounted for 41.95% of car retail, marginally exceeding petrol/ethanol’s 40.85% share. Within this changing market, electric cars continue to gain ground, with August registrations growing nearly 52% compared to last year.
