With local manufacturing, Yamaha will be able to offer the R2 at a competitive price point, closely matching that of the KTM RC 200

YZF-R2 is Yamaha’s entirely new project, aimed at filling the gap between the R15 and R3. The bike is expected to be manufactured at Yamaha’s Chennai factory. In addition to the Indian market, Yamaha R2 may also cater to export markets. The bike has already been trademarked in India and other markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Philippines.

Yamaha R2 – What to expect?

Yamaha R2 is part of the brand’s portfolio expansion plan for the Indian market. It is possible that Yamaha could also introduce the NMax 155, which was recently patented in India. However, the primary focus might be on the R2, since the bike will be making its global debut. Yamaha’s recent media invite for 27th August indicates the possibility of R2’s launch.

Internally codenamed 070, Yamaha R2 could be based on the same platform as the R15 V4. The latter uses a Deltabox frame, which is known for its high torsional rigidity and precise handling, ensuring track-focused ride dynamics. Yamaha R2 is likely to get USD forks at the front and a linked-type monocross suspension at the rear. Braking setup could comprise disc brakes at both ends, integrated with dual-channel ABS.

Yamaha R2 is expected to get a comprehensive range of premium features. The package could include Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), which delivers ample torque even at low RPMs. Other key features expected with Yamaha R2 include traction control system, quick shifter (hopefully bi-directional) and an assist & slipper clutch. Safety kit could include features like a wide radial rear tyre and side stand engine cut-off switch.

Performance, tech package

Engine details for Yamaha R2 are yet to be revealed. The bike is likely to utilize a bored-out version of the existing 155cc single-cylinder engine in use with the R15. Output could be around 25 PS and 20 Nm of torque. Using a single-cylinder setup will help reduce production costs, making the bike more suitable for the mass market.

Rival KTM RC 200 has a 199.5 cc, single cylinder engine that generates 25 PS and 19.2 Nm of torque. Options in this segment also include the Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, which has an output of 24.5 PS and 18.7 Nm. Also available is Hero Karizma XMR 210, which generates 25.5 PS and 20.4 Nm of torque. While the performance figures of these bikes are quite similar, factors such as power delivery characteristics, chassis dynamics, riding ergonomics, throttle response, and suspension and braking performance can influence purchase decisions.

Yamaha R2 is also expected to get features like a full digital TFT instrument console. Users will be able to access a comprehensive range of connected features like calls, SMS and email alerts via the Y-Connect app. Users can also check other details like phone battery level status, fuel consumption tracker, maintenance recommendations, last parking location, malfunction notification and riding stats.
