A rare moment, Anglicans and Catholics unite for joint Way of the Cross in Ntungamo
by The Independent · The Independent Uganda:Ntungamo, Uganda | URN | Christians from the Anglican and Catholic faiths in Nyamunuka Town Council, Ntungamo District, yesterday came together in a rare show of unity to mark Good Friday through a joint Way of the Cross procession.
The procession brought together Anglicans from Bwongyera Archdeaconry and Catholics from Kishariro Catholic Parish.
It started from River Kahengye and moved through different areas before ending at Nyakazinga Market in Kishariro I Cell, Central Ward.
Church leaders from both denominations jointly led the prayers and reflections. The Catholic side was led by the Parish Priest of Kishariro Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr. Bruno Tumwesigye, assisted by Rev. Fr. Fitus Turyasingura and Rev. Fr. Kamirusi Kwehangana.
On the Anglican side, the team was led by the Archdeacon of Bwongyera Archdeaconry, Ven. Rev. Canon Milton Turyashaba, accompanied by Rev. Ronald Tumuzigu of Kyabashenyi Parish, Rev. Prossy Kamara of Kitojo Parish, Rev. Abel Amuhairwe of Mahwa Parish, and Rev. Ivan Tayebwa of Rwankoora Parish.
While delivering his message at Nyakazinga Market after the procession, Ven. Rev. Canon Turyashaba encouraged Christians to remain united, love one another, and reflect on the suffering of Jesus Christ. He emphasized the importance of cooperation among believers despite their different denominations.
Rev. Fr. Bruno Tumwesigye also called on Christians to use Good Friday as a time for repentance, forgiveness, and strengthening their faith in God.
The Speaker of Nyamunuka Town Council, who is also the Mayor-elect, Yassin Byamukama Katafa, thanked both religious groups for organizing the joint event. He described it as a strong sign of unity and urged residents to learn from it by avoiding religious divisions and working together for development.
Katafa also expressed gratitude to the people of Nyamunuka for electing him as mayor and pledged to serve them diligently and promote unity in the area.
The event was also attended by the Member of Parliament-elect for Kajara County, Hon. Hunter Tukahirwa Byenjeru, who commended the initiative and called for continued cooperation among different faiths.
The joint Way of the Cross is seen as a rare but powerful example of unity between the Anglican and Catholic churches, inspiring many in the community to embrace peace and togetherness.
