ITV Coronation Street's Gail Platt's final scenes confirmed as she leaves Weatherfield
by George Allen, Charlotte Tutton · NottinghamshireLiveCoronation Street fans have been warned to prepare for a tearful Christmas Day, as it marks the departure of soap legend Gail Platt. The Corrie executive producer Kate Brooks has confirmed that Helen Worth, who has portrayed Gail for an impressive 50 years, will feature in her final scenes during the festive episode, promising a mix of shocking revelations and heart-wrenching moments.
Helen Worth's exit is set to leave both co-stars and fans heartbroken. On the day of her on-screen wedding to Jesse Chadwick, viewers can expect "wonderful" and yet "sad" moments as they bid farewell to the matriarch of the Platt family.
Despite the anticipation for this major episode, those looking to stream the events on Christmas morning will face disappointment; ITV bosses have opted out of their recent streaming-first approach for these pivotal scenes. Speaking to The Mirror, Kate revealed, "[The episode is] set against Gail's wedding, whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything. But this is a story with the Platts at the heart of it, it's really festive, basically it's a story about family and how secrets impact and implode on a family."
She further teased, "So there's a lot of betrayals, lots of secrets are exposed during this episode and it will be like classic Corrie with a bit of a twist. [We want] to make sure that we give glorious Gail the exit that she deserves."
Helen revealed her departure from the ITV soap this year with a poignant statement in June, and after five decades on the show, she recently filmed her last ever scenes. Helen's farewell party was held with her beloved castmates after her final shoot, reports the Mirror.
Speaking on the anticipation of Gail's concluding episodes, set for Christmas Day, Kate Oates disclosed: "She's been such an icon on the street for such a long time. 50 years of television, which is amazing. We can't tell a story on Christmas Day about her exit without it feeling and being steeped in nostalgia."
She also hinted at the mix of emotions audiences will endure, mentioning: "There's tons of nostalgia in this episode and hopefully people will be crying, they'll be laughing, there'll be gasps as people watching it go, 'Oh my goodness, that's just happened' but yeah, old school Corrie but just with a real modern twist and I think people will really, really enjoy it."
Major revelations are promised as well, as Kate let slip that "secrets come to the forefront" and Gail discovers a betrayal by those she holds dear. Facing so much turmoil, Gail contemplates if she can proceed with her nuptials and ultimately makes a heartfelt goodbye to Coronation Street in sequences described as both "wonderful and sad".
Actress Helen has made the news official that she will be departing her role in June, stating: "This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet."
