The Met Office has delivered its latest verdict on the Christmas Day forecast. It is probably the most talked about prediction of the year and with just two days to go, the weather agency has issued its most recent update.

Early predictions suggested there was a 'chance' of snow on Christmas Day in Nottinghamshire. But the latest forecast suggests it could be "extremely mild" with temperatures around "double the average" for the time of year.

The Met Office forecast for Monday, December 23 is for an overcast/cloudy day with the possibility of light rain later in the day. Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 7°C.

Overnight it's expected to be damp and murky with temperatures not expected to drop any lower than 3°C. Christmas Eve is expected to be " very mild" and cloudy with temperatures around 13°C.

Christmas Day itself is expected to be "predominantly settled" with "mild and cloudy conditions" with winds gradually easing. Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said: “We’re expecting to see some sunny spells further east and a lot of cloud from the west.

“Temperatures should rise considerably and it will be extremely mild over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. In England and Wales, temperatures will be well above average with some grey in the mix.

“We’re expecting an average of around 12C or 13C on Christmas Eve and 11C or 12C on Christmas Day. The usual average for this time of year is 7C or 8C so we’ll be around double where we usually are.

“Overnight temperatures in Scotland for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be extremely mild.”
