It looks like there's more than one wallaby roaming Nottinghamshire

People are urged to report any sightings to the Wildlife Trust

The Wildlife Trust says it's surprised after multiple wallabies were spotted across Nottinghamshire in recent months. A small marsupial was first spotted in Calverton during the early hours of Sunday, July 21, and since then wallabies have also been seen in various locations, including as far apart as Bottesford and Bilsthorpe.

After the initial sighting many people were caught unaware as they had no idea there were wild wallabies in the area. However, the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust confirmed the sighting likely to be true.

The trust has received several reports of the animal, which it believes could have escaped from a private collection. A sighting of a wallaby at the Oakmere Golf Club near Southwell then followed this on Monday, July 29.

With sightings of wallabies being reported across the county, the trust is calling on people to report any sightings to its website Nature Counts. Due to the distance between sightings, it is understood that there are multiple wallabies in the wild rather than a single escapee making its way around the county.

Erin McDaid, head of communications and marketing, said: "Following the initial reports of a wallaby sighting near Calverton, we’ve been surprised at the distance between other sightings across the county, as far apart as Bottesford and Bilsthorpe.

"Given the number and spread of sightings, it seems unlikely that they all relate to one isolated escape, so we’re calling on people to send in any sightings of wallabies via our website ‘Nature Counts’. Records of sightings help us build a better picture of species distribution and we would welcome records of other species from across the county too."
