Carvery at Oliver's Pub & Kitchen in Eastwood

5 of the best carveries in Nottinghamshire plus one over the border that's extra special

by · NottinghamshireLive

With the chill of autumn whipping round you, it's definitely the season for comfort food. Soup, pies and stews serve us well during the week but on a Sunday that means a roast for many.

And what's even better than melt-in-the-mouth beef, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding served at the table? A carvery, that's what, where you can pick as much as you like... and no one is going to force you to eat cabbage.

If you've got a really big appetite you can pay a little extra at some of them to go large. There's even the option to have your carvery at home.

In no particular order, here's a selection of the carveries you will find with a range of prices for all pockets across the county. We've slipped in an extra one at the end of the article just over the border in Sandiacre, Derbyshire, as it's rather special.

The Rancliffe Arms

The Rancliffe Arms' carvery

Widely regarded as one of the best in Notts, you don't even have to wait until Sunday to have a carvery at the cosy family-run pub, just off the A60 at Bunny. Roasts are also available on Wednesdays, both at lunchtime and in the evening.

Get stuck into turkey, pork loin, topside of beef or baked ham with a marmalade and cinnamon rub, with all the trimmings, including locally grown potatoes. A veggie option is a tartlet with ratatouille and brie, while vegans are served butternut squash, sweet potato and coriander falafel with ratatouille. Gluten-free Yorkshire puds, stuffing and gravy are available too so coeliacs won't be disappointed.

You don't don't have to eat in on Sundays, when you can order a roast takeaway (collection only) and the price includes a dessert.

You say: Great carvery option, excellent selection of sides to load the plate up with. Everything from your classic carrot to year round Brussel's sprouts, to mini sausages to root veg mash. Don't fill up too much on the carvery though, as the dessert options are good, rich and decadent too.

Price:Adults £19.50, children £10.50 (ages 3-10) eating in. Takeaway main course and dessert £22.50.

Times: Wednesdays 12pm to 2pm and 5.30pm to 8pm and Sundays noon to 7pm.

Every day is a carvery day at The Vale pub, running alongside the main menu which has dishes such as cottage pie, fish and chips and curry.

Described as a "hearty feast", there's a wide selection of roast meats with seasonal vegetables, and "our best ever crispy roasted potatoes and traditional Yorkshire puddings".

The pub operates a walk-in service for the carvery and assures customers that groups of up to four are generally seated within a few minutes of arrival. However, to guarantee a table for bigger groups you can make a booking.

You say: "Great atmosphere and always a warm welcome. Food choice is excellent but I always recommend the carvery, the best in Nottingham BY FAR! Dog-friendly too, and a pool table and darts as a new addition to the place is a game changer."

Price: Sunday adults £12.95, over 60s £9.95, children under 12 £6. Monday to Saturday adults £9.95, over 60s £7.75, under 12s £6.

Goose fat roast potatoes, lashings of gravy and Yorkshire puddings as big as the moon (nearly) are served.

Beeston Fields Golf Club

Beeston Fields Golf Club

A golf club might be the last place you'd expect to go for a carvery but you don't need a set of clubs to tee off a Sunday lunch with a view of the course. Locally sourced meats are on rotation each week with a choice of two of either beef sirloin, sugar baked gammon, turkey or pork loin with sea salt crackling. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

Homemade Yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes, and a selection of locally farmed vegetables are served alongside.

You say: "Everyone was really impressed. Everything was spot on, from the characterful building, the friendly and efficient staff and the carvery itself."

Riverside Farm

Riverside Farm is home to a value for money carvery

When it comes to value for money, the pub's daily carveries are hard to beat. One of the cheapest around on a weekday, it boasts 14-hour slow roasted meats - or if you're veggie, there's cheese, onion and potato pie.

If the wide choice of vegetables, ruffled roasties and freshly cooked Yorkshire puddings are not enough you can pay an extras £2 to go large. Pigs in blankets and another Yorkie will can also be added for £2.

There's even the option to order online to have your carvery at home. Part of the Farmhouse Inns chain, the same deal is also available at Holly Tree Farm in Nuthall and Kings Mill Farm at Sutton-in-Ashfield.
