UK's 'busiest' speed cameras - with more than a third of drivers caught out in one area
by Louis Corbett, Jack Mortimer · NottinghamshireLiveThe UK's "busiest" speed cameras have been revealed, with more than a third of drivers in one area being caught out. As part of efforts to curb speeding-related accidents and injuries, new cameras are being installed and speed limits lowered across various parts of the country.
An online price comparison service has now shared a list of the worst counties for speeding across England. Greg Wilson, chief executive of Quotezone, emphasised that their study found speeding to be a widespread issue among drivers in England, reports the Express.
He said: "With such a high number of offences across different areas of the country it's clear that speeding is still very much an issue that's not going away anytime soon. For one area to record almost 4 in 10 of its population being caught speeding is quite shocking – speed limits are vital for everyone's safety."
According to Quotezone's study, which collated data from 39 territorial police forces across England, Warwickshire is the worst county for speeding offences. The company found a total of 210,393 speeding offences in the county, accounting for 38% of the population.
Previous studies by Warwickshire Police have shown that they are one of the most proactive forces in capturing offending motorists in England, working alongside the Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.
Quotezone's study also highlighted other areas with a high incidence of the common driving offence. In Lincolnshire, nearly 95,000 cases were recorded.
West Yorkshire also saw a significant number, with speeding cases accounting for 10.8% of its relatively large population of over 2.1 million. The Metropolitan Police area in London had the highest number of recorded speeding offences at 757,375.
However, due to its equally high population, this represented 8.5% of cases per capita. Here are the top 10 areas in England for speeding, based on the percentage of offences per capita:
- Warwickshire - 38 percent
- Lincolnshire - 12.7 percent
- West Yorkshire - 10.8 percent
- West Mercia - 9.5 percent
- Metropolitan Police - 8.5 percent
- Derbyshire - 8.5 percent
- Durham - 7.5 percent
- Dorset - 7 percent
- Gloucestershire - 6.5 percent
- Cumbria - 6.3 percent
