The common dishwasher mistakes we're all making
by Jamie Barlow, Ethan Evans · NottinghamshireLiveLoading and unloading a dishwasher is considered one of the most tedious tasks in our daily routines. It's often avoided until there's no clean plate or utensil left in sight, that’s when it becomes impossible to ignore.
However, even this drab duty can be done incorrectly, as highlighted by a Which? expert who has compiled a list of common mishaps we make while washing up. This handy guide is also available on the consumer group's TikTok channel.
The advice might surprise you, with the expert saying: "I never rinse my plates. Just scrape off the food and put them straight in. Your dishwasher can more than cope with it, and it saves on water and energy," reports the Express.
Dishwasher myths dispelled include not to fuss over the detergent dispenser. Contrary to common practice where individuals meticulously fill the detergent compartment before running their dishwasher, the expert suggests simply 'chucking in' the tablet works just as effectively.
The Which? expert has shared some useful tips on how to use a dishwasher effectively. "I never bother with the detergent dispenser. You can chuck the tablet straight in and it works just as well."
Maintenance is crucial for any machine, including dishwashers. To ensure its longevity and protect it from bacteria and mould, regular maintenance is necessary. The dishwashing expert from Which advised: "I never dodge maintenance. Keep your salt and your rinse aid topped up, frequently clean the filter, and regularly keep the door open to allow air to circulate."
This can help prevent the build-up of mould, bacteria, and other general nastiness. When loading the dishwasher, avoid stacking dishes randomly. This could result in the dishes not being cleaned properly, especially if larger items are placed incorrectly or there isn't enough space.
The expert added: "I never stack randomly. Make sure everything is spaced out - big items at the back, away from the middle, plates facing inward, and make sure no tall items are blocking the spray arms."
Numerous common household items are frequently and incorrectly placed in the dishwasher for cleaning. The TikTok video garnered engaging responses, including one user who remarked: "I found this incredibly interesting and informative."
