Horrifying pictures have shown the wreckage of a car that skidded off an icy Nottinghamshire road due to the treacherous driving conditions.

Sections of the A46 were closed in both directions after a number of crashes on Friday, January 2, with officers saying at 10.15am that officers were blocking off the A-road near Willoughby-on-the-Wolds.

The stretch was closed between its junctions with the A606 Melton Road, near Widmerpool, and the A6006 Wide Lane.

Nottinghamshire Police said a number of drivers had lost control of their vehicles and left the slippery road on Friday morning, but that no one had been seriously injured.

Photos taken at the scene by stuck motorists and firefighters showed a dicey road surface and a severely damaged black Ford that had left the road.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said one person was trapped in the stranded vehicle, but was freed by firefighters and treated by paramedics.

National Highways, which manages the A46, said it had been gritting the road and would be taking all measures to keep motorists safe.

A spokesperson said there had been little traffic overnight and into Friday morning, which may have stopped the salt from fully dissolving and being more effective.
