Nancy Guthrie kidnapping: Detective reveals ‘crucial clue’ that could solve case

It has been four months since the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of TV anchor Savannah Guthrie from her Arizona home on February 1, 2026.

Although investigators are pursuing leads and analyzing DNA evidence and blood samples, they fail to unlock any major breakthrough that could solve the case.

Since the disappearance of the 84-year-old, several shocking theories have surfaced regarding her kidnapping, key suspect and the evidence involved.

Speaking with NewsNation’s Brian Entin, a former Modesto Police Department detective turned law enforcement consultant has revealed another investigatory clue that could lead to a “big break” in the case.

According to Jon Buehler, the critical clue may already be among the thousands of tips received. He notes that in high-profile investigations, vital information can sometimes be overlooked if buried within large volumes of data.

“When tips come in on a case like Nancy Guthrie’s, they’re prioritized as best they can, but you still don’t know for sure if they’re prioritized correctly, and so there might be something in there that we’re waiting on, that could break it wide open,” Buehler said.

Buehler suggests that modern digital forensics could be instrumental in solving the case. Key areas of focus include: Using data from cars in the area of Nancy’s home through GPS and surveillance cameras may identify a potential suspect.

Talking about digital footprints, Buehler said, performing a "reverse keyword search" on map services will help to identify individuals who searched for Guthrie’s specific address prior to the incident.

Former detective Buehler also expressed significant concern that Nancy may not have survived the kidnapping. He gave following reasons to justify his claims, including the amount of blood discovered at the residence, lack of ransom demand and the vulnerability regarding her age and poor health.

“The reason I’m fearful she didn’t survive the abduction is kind of twofold. No. 1, no instantaneous demand for a reward with indication that she’s fine and that they’ll release her. That’s a pretty big stretch there to think that she survived it,” he added.
