In this article, we will look at the upcoming mid-size electric SUVs in India.

1&2. Mahindra BE.05 & BE.Rall-E

Mahindra will launch the first model from its BE range of EVs next year, the BE.05 along with the BE.Rall-E. The mid-size electric SUVs will be based on the brand’s born electric INGLO skateboard platform. The BE.Rall-E is the crossover sporty version based on the standard BE.05 coupe SUV. Measuring 4,370 mm long with a wheelbase of 2,775 mm, the design of both the EVs will be similar, however, the Rall-E version will get some extra sporty bits.

It will be rear-wheel drive as standard while an AWD version could also be launched.

3. Mahindra XUV.e8

The all-electric version of the XUV700 will be the first model to debut as a part of Mahindra’s born electric range. Dubbed the XUV.e8, the mid-size electric SUV will be based on the company’s new electric-specific INGLO platform and it is expected to debut by the year end while the market launch is likely by early next year i.e. 2025.

The electric SUV will draw power from an 80 kWh battery pack, producing a power output in the range of 227-345 bhp. It will be available in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations using a single and dual motor setup, respectively.

4. Mahindra XUV.e9

The XUV.e9 is the coupe version of the XUV.e8 EV and scheduled for a launch next year i.e. 2025. Expected to be Mahindra’s flagship model, it will share the powertrain package with the XUV.e8, comprising a battery pack of around 80 kWh. The AWD version will use two electric motors producing a maximum power output of up to 350 bhp.

As opposed to the XUV.e8 which is a 7-seater model, the electric coupe SUV will only be offered in the 5-seater configuration. A long list of features, modern design language, sorted powertrain setup and a spacious cabin with loads of boot space will likely be its major highlights.

5. Maruti Suzuki eVX

Maruti Suzuki will debut the eVX mid-size electric SUV in the Indian market by the end of 2024 and the launch is scheduled for early 2025. Underpinned by a brand new born-electric skateboard platform, Maruti’s first EV has already been spied testing in its near-production guise.

In terms of dimensions, the production-spec vehicle will measure 4.3 meters in length with a wheelbase of 2700mm. As per the details revealed by the company, the EV will be available in two battery pack options i.e. a 48 kWh unit with a claimed range of around 400 kilometres and a larger 60 kWh battery delivering 550 kilometres on a single charge.

6. Hyundai Creta EV

Hyundai’s first mass-market electric car for the Indian market, the Creta EV will be launched early next year. Based on the facelifted Creta, the electric SUV has been spotted multiple times during test runs. In terms of the powertrain, it will use a 45 kWh battery pack with the power output rated at 138 bhp and 255 Nm of peak torque.

This setup is a straight life-off from the base-spec version of the latest generation Kona EV sold in the international markets. The design will be familiar to the conventionally powered Creta Facelift, although with some EV-specific touches. Once launched, it will rival the likes of the Tata Curvv EV, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX and MG Windsor amongst others.

7. Tata Harrier EV

The Tata Harrier EV has been in the development phase for a long time now and it has already been showcased as a concept at the 2023 Auto Expo and Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. The electric derivative of Harrier is expected to debut next year in India. The Harrier EV will be based on the heavily modified electric-specific version of the current OMEGA-Arc platform.

The SUV is expected to sport a battery pack of 60 kWh, delivering a claimed range of around 500 kilometres. In terms of design, it will be quite familiar to the current Harrier, however, will have some electric-specific touches. It will also get a dual-motor AWD setup.

8. Tata Safari EV

The Safari EV is also on the cards and will debut around the same timeline as the Harrier EV. Tata Motors has been testing the electrified Safari for quite some time and we have spotted the test mule on multiple occasions, confirming its launch in the Indian market.

The design will be shared with the conventionally powered Safari along with some electric-specific changes like aero-efficient wheels, blanked-off front grille and EV badging amongst others. The powertrain will be shared with the Harrier EV and it will also get the AWD (all-wheel-drive) system as an option.
