The forthcoming 7-seater Hyundai hybrid SUV will sit between the Alcazar and the Tucson in the lineup and will likely feature hybrid tech

Hyundai is preparing to launch a new SUV in India, known by the codename Ni1i, with an expected arrival over the next two years. Positioned between the updated Alcazar and the Tucson in the company’s local PV range, this C-segment model will be produced at Hyundai’s Talegaon plant near Pune. This facility will also handle production for the second-generation Venue.

Hyundai is reportedly preparing a range of new SUVs, further strengthening its already popular lineup. Prior to the launch of the Ni1i, the brand will focus on expanding its SUV offerings further. The Ni1i will distinguish itself as Hyundai’s first model to incorporate advanced hybrid technology, offering notable improvements in fuel efficiency.

When it launches, this three-row SUV will rival models like the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and other similar competitors with its hybrid powertrain serving as a major differentiating factor. Alongside Maruti Suzuki and Toyota, Mahindra also seems to be exploring hybridized SUVs for the Indian market.

The upcoming SUV could be built on the long-wheelbase version of the Tucson, currently available in China, which measures 4.68 meters in length. Hyundai plans to offer a more spacious alternative to the Alcazar while positioning the new model in a higher, more premium price range. Internationally, the Tucson is already offered with a 1.6-litre petrol/hybrid engine, along with a plug-in hybrid option.

Hyundai may use its current 1.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine as the foundation for the hybrid system, potentially incorporating a larger battery pack and an electric motor to boost fuel efficiency. The company is aiming for an annual production target of around 50,000 units for this C-SUV. It is expected to offer a range of powertrain options including standard petrol, strong hybrid, and diesel variants, along with multiple gearbox choices.
