South Island Not Spared From Cyclone Impacts
by NZTA · SCOOPAs Tropical Cyclone Vaianu tracks toward New Zealand this weekend, those living and travelling in north-eastern parts of the South Island are being encouraged to prepare for potential impacts.
While the North Island is expected to bear the brunt of what is predicted to become a “significant sub-tropical system” when it reaches New Zealand, a heavy rain watch for Eastern Marlborough (especially between Blenheim and Kaikoura) and about the Richmond Range, has now been upgraded by MetService to an orange heavy rain warning for the 14 hours from 9am tomorrow.
This orange level of warning indicates streams and rivers may rise rapidly; and surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is preparing for the potential impact that this weather system may have on the state highway network across the country. In partnership with MetService, NZTA is using the available information to plan.
Response actions include attending to any slips, flooding, fallen trees or other events on the state highway network that may restrict or prevent access. These actions will only be undertaken where it is safe to do so. NZTA will be decisive about closing roads if the safety of road users or road workers is compromised.
Those planning to travel from tomorrow are urged to keep a watch on the weather and roading conditions, and to make decisions accordingly.
NZTA will keep people informed as the event unfolds. The current status of the state highway network can be found via the NZTA Journey Planner site, and updates will be posted on the regional NZTA social media accounts on Facebook and X.
