According to the country's official immigration guidelines, transit passengers are permitted to remain in New Zealand for a maximum of 24 hours and must stay within the designated transit area of the airport for the entire duration.
Who doesn't need transit visa in New Zealand
The Transit Visa applies to any traveller passing through Auckland International Airport who does not fall within a recognised exempt category. Seven groups are excluded from the requirement entirely.

New Zealand and Australian citizens or permanent residents are exempt, as are holders of a valid New Zealand visa. Travellers carrying passports from transit visa waiver countries or standard visa waiver countries also do not need to apply, nor do passengers travelling to or from Australia.
Three additional groups are excluded: holders of foreign passports bearing a New Zealand citizen endorsement, members or associates of scientific programmes or expeditions operating under the Antarctic Treaty, and members of visiting forces travelling in the ordinary course of their duties.
NZeTA as an alternative for eligible travellers
For those coming from visa waiver countries or transit visa waiver countries, New Zealand offers an alternative to the Transit Visa in the form of the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority, known as the NZeTA. Travellers must meet the country's good character requirements to be eligible for this option.
The NZeTA route is also available to passengers transiting through New Zealand on their way to or from Australia. Those heading to Australia must, however, hold a valid Australian visa at the time of travel.
The distinction between these pathways carries practical significance for African travellers in particular, many of whom are increasingly routing long-haul journeys through New Zealand. Knowing which category applies determines whether a full visa application is needed well ahead of travel or whether the faster NZeTA online process is sufficient.
