WhatsApp Ends Support for Older iPhones

by · Gizchina

WhatsApp, a popular messaging app will stop working on older iPhones from 5 May 2025. This change affects devices that cannot update to iOS 15.1 or later. Models such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus are on this list. These phones, launched in 2013 and 2014, only support iOS 12.5.7, making them unable to meet the app’s future needs. According to WABetaInfo, fewer users now rely on older phones. WhatsApp wants to prioritize compatibility with modern operating systems to support sophisticated functionalities and enhanced security measures. By ceasing support for older iOS versions, the platform gains the opportunity to integrate advanced features and streamline its performance, free from the constraints imposed by outdated technologies.

Updates for Newer Models

Owners of newer iPhones running outdated iOS versions can update their software to stay connected. This can be done by going to “Settings,” choosing “General,” and selecting “Software Update.” For those with unsupported iPhones, WhatsApp suggests three solutions:

  1. Upgrade to a newer iPhone that runs iOS 15.1 or beyond.
  2. Switch to an Android device.
  3. Choose a different chat app.

To ease the shift, WhatsApp provides tools for moving chat history between devices, whether switching within iOS or between iOS and Android. With the latest announcement, Whatsapp is giving users of these old models only six months to upgrade their devices. Many people with older iPhones use them because of financial constraints. Thus, the six-month timeline may not be enough for these users. Nevertheless, they have other options to explore.

This decision reflects how tech evolves to meet modern demands. As apps grow, they need stronger systems to handle new tasks and features. While this may feel abrupt to users with older phones, it ensures the app stays reliable and secure. These devices have had WhatsApp support for several years, so, it’s only logical that the support ends. Users will now have to decide whether to upgrade, switch platforms or try out new apps.
