BBC Breakfast blunder exposed by show - but livid viewers fume 'get a grip'

BBC Breakfast viewers were left less than impressed when a mishap on the show was laid bare for all to see.

The morning show aired again on Saturday (October 12), with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt back steering the ship. After a while, they transitioned to Samira Ahmed for the Newswatch segment of the programme.

It was during this session that an earlier error from the week's broadcast was mentioned. On the show from Thursday (October 10), presenters Charlie and Naga were in conversation with forecaster Carol Kirkwood when an unexpectedly severe weather warning popped up.

Naga highlighted a malfunction with the BBC weather app, which mistakenly signalled hurricane-strength winds were on their way. Carol quickly tried to clarify the situation for those watching at home.

Carol stated: "Yes, I'm afraid we do have a technical glitch this morning and my apologies for this.", reports the Express.

Assuring the public, she continued, "Our technicians are trying to fix it as swiftly as possible. However, I assure you that the hurricane force winds shown there are not expected."

Discontent among viewers was palpable at the time, prompting them to lodge their grievances with the corporation. This discontent became a topic of discussion during the Newwatch feature on Saturday (October 12) where presenter Samira Ahmed acknowledged the wave of viewer frustration.

Contributions included one fan questioning: "Has someone pressed the wrong button?" While another enquired: "Have the Russians hacked the BBC website?" Furthermore, a concerned viewer speculated: "This could be scary, especially for older folk."

A BBC spokesperson issued an apology for a recent blunder concerning forecasted hurricane wind speeds on their weather app and website, telling Newsnight: "An issue with our third party supplier meant our weather app and website wrongly predicted hurricane wind speeds everywhere."

"We apologise for this and worked with our supplier to fix the issue as quickly as possible," they further noted.

Meanwhile, viewers expressed their irritation over people's exaggerated responses to the error. A critical comment on social media platform X read: "FFS......didn't people realise it was just a mistake on the BBC weather app?" Another dismissed the hullabaloo, stating: "As if you believe those forecasts get a grip."

BBC Breakfast airs Monday to Sunday on BBC One.
