American shares pronunciation for Nutella – and it's different to how Brits say it

A woman shared a video on TikTok showing there are two ways to pronounce the brand name of the popular hazelnut spread Nutella – but people can't agree on which is correct

by · Daily Record

Nutella is a hazelnut spread loved worldwide.

It's a staple in many homes since Italian chocolatier Ferrero created the jar in 1964. But despite Nutella being around for decades, it's pronunciation is still causing a stir among many foodies online.

Recently shared on TikTok by user @englishmakesnosense, with an impressive 1.3 million followers, the woman grabbed people's attention by sharing two ways of saying the chocolate treat.

Known as SL Rockfish, she posed the question while clutching a jar of Nutella: "How do you pronounce this product? I love this word and the taste of the product, but how do you pronounce it? Great question..."

With enthusiasm, she spells out the label before explaining: "If you're in the UK, they pronounce it Nut-ella. The U is sharp. Well that makes sense as there's nut in it."

However, she contrasts this with the American pronunciation, whereby it's given an 'ooh' sound as in 'Noo-tella', which diverges from the British 'uh'.

In the video, the woman humorously expresses her bafflement at the difference, saying: "I don't know, we all like it."

The viral video sparked heated debate over the pronunciation of Nutella, with some arguing it's said one way, while others claim it's another.

The clip, which gained 2,000 likes, had viewers weighing in on the situation. One commented: "Nutella is an Italian word. The American one is correct, as similar to Italian."

Another said: "It's an Italian word!" A third chimed in: "Why don't you simply pronounce it right? It's an Italian product." A fourth added: "Americans are correct."

However, not everyone agreed, as one wrote: "The Brits are probably saying it correctly."
