Raise a dram for St Andrew's Day with these whisky deals
by Prudence Wade, https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/authors/prudence-wade/ · Daily RecordSt Andrew's Day is fast approaching on November 30, and there are few better ways to celebrate the occasion than pouring out a drop of proper Scottish whisky. Luckily, this time of year also coincides with Black Friday - meaning whisky lovers can get some of their favourite drops for a cut price.
Amazon is a great place to look for a new bottle, as speedy delivery means it'll be with you in no time. Perhaps the only thorny question to answer is this: which whisky should you go for?
You could opt for a classic in The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which comes in a gift box if you can bear to part with it yourself. It's currently reduced from £39.50 to £22.99 and promises fruity notes of orange and pear, along with the smooth creaminess of toffee.

It has racked up 4.8 stars out of 5 from over 10,400 reviews, with one customer calling it "a masterpiece that upholds the brand's legacy with pride. Its timeless elegance, rich flavour profile, smooth texture, balanced complexity, and versatile enjoyment make it a standout choice among single malts." However, one drinker noted a "disappointingly flat aroma and taste".
Then there's Aberlour's 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which is reduced from £45 down to £29.99. This is a softer drop, matured in sherry casks for a fruity taste and slightly spicy afternotes. It has a 4.8 rating from nearly 6,000 reviews, with one shopper saying: "Lovely, smooth and full of the right flavours. Would buy any day of the week." However, another said they "found this really bland".
For a really wallet-friendly option, you could go for The Famous Grouse Finest Scotch, which £18.50 for 1L (down from £25.50). This is a smooth and easy drinker, perhaps best suited to people just starting out in their whisky journey - plus, it goes exceptionally well with ginger ale and a wedge of lime. "Great tasting and a very good price," noted one Amazon customer, where the whisky has a 4.8 rating from 1,571 reviews. But another did say it "doesn't last long enough."
Or if you wanted something really unique, we'd recommend The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve Single Malt Whisky, which is reduced to £23.75 from £41.50. This is unlike any other bottle on the list, as the whisky has been finished in barrels that previously held Caribbean rum - resulting in a fruitier, more tropical vibe that makes it particularly perfect in a mixed drink or cocktail. Happy customers have awarded it 4.7 stars from nearly 2,800 reviews, with one writing: "A very nice bottle for a very reasonable price! Smooth indeed! Easy as it hits the taste buds, with that hint of rum." However, another wasn't quite so impressed: "Easy to drink, but tropical flavours like toasted banana are too subtle to notice. Was hoping for a punchier, sweeter expression."
Finally, another solid option on Amazon is the Jura Bourbon Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which is reduced from £36 to £21.85. Matured in white oak casks that previously housed bourbon, it has aromas of vanilla and coconut, with notes of toffee, fruits and cocoa.
It has a 4.8 star average rating from 485 reviews on Amazon, with one shopper noting: "The first sip reveals a smooth, medium-bodied whisky that balances sweetness and spice. The finish is long and warming and overall it is a well-rounded, approachable whisky that showcases the classic Jura character with a distinct bourbon influence." But another drinker was less impressed, writing: "On the palate, it's a little thin."
If you want to get your whisky fix from elsewhere, you could look to The Whisky Exchange, where a bottle of Tobermory 12-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky is currently reduced to £33.25. Alternatively, a bottle of The Singleton of Dufftown Single Malt costs £44 from Sainsbury's.
