Little-known parking rule that could land drivers a £1,000 fine

Lets face it - we are all guilty of forgetting a thing or two since passing both our theory and practical driving test. But, now this one little mistake could cost you a £1,000 fine.

Drivers in the UK have been warned they could face a large fine, if they are not aware of certain parking rules.

According Chris Williams from leading car competitions company BOTB, 75% of UK adults have a drivers licence, but its the lesser known laws that often catch them out.

As we previously reported, the rules of the road are generally followed by many motorists, but Chris has warned we should be mindful of the ones that are less common.

He explained: "Many of the laws surrounding UK driving are understood by most road users and wouldn't present much of a problem.

"But what catches drivers out are the less common laws - these are the ones that you likely don't think about when behind the wheel."

Chris expressed that drivers aren’t very familiar with where they aren’t allowed to park their cars, completely disregarding the rule of no parking against the flow of traffic at night.

Additionally, he mentioned that cars should be parked towards the flow of traffic, so that other road users don’t get confused when the red from the rear and white from the front are reflected.

If drivers don't comply with this rule, they could be hit with a fine of up to £1,000.

Rule 248 of the Highway Code states: "You must not park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space."

Drivers in cars caught ignoring the rules of the Highway Code could be fined £1,000 and raising to £2,500 for goods vehicles and passenger vehicles carrying eight or more people.

A spokesperson for car scrapping comparison site Scrapcarcomparison.co.uk previously said: "Motors parked the correct way would be visible and illuminated by headlights bouncing off the rear reflectors.
