Rastafarians in Ghana came together this week to commemorate the 94th coronation anniversary of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I and to celebrate the launch of EWFI Radio, a new platform aimed at promoting African unity and education across the diaspora.

The event honored the legacy of Haile Selassie as a symbol of black pride and African sovereignty.

Amde Tsion, President of Emperor Yohannes Local 30, addressed attendees, reflecting on the historical significance of Haile Selassie’s coronation in 1930, which had a profound impact on the global black community.

“Before Selassie, Africans were often seen as dependent on Western rulers,” Tsion said, “but his coronation inspired a new vision of independence and unity, influenced by the teachings of Marcus Garvey.” He emphasized that Selassie’s lineage, traced to King Solomon and King David, gave hope to communities worldwide, particularly Rastafarians in Jamaica and beyond, who were inspired by the image of a black king.

The launch of EWFI Radio represents a step toward fulfilling Selassie’s vision for African unity. As an internet-based station, it will serve as a bridge for communities across the diaspora to discuss critical issues and share knowledge.

Attendees were encouraged to scan QR codes on their shirts to access the station, symbolizing a new way to connect and engage with people globally.

Tsion expressed optimism about the station’s potential to address important challenges faced by the continent, including economic exploitation and environmental degradation caused by foreign mining interests.

He noted, “Corruption and division by tribal and religious lines have weakened us, but a united African front can set an example for others. We are stronger together.”

The federation, which operates branches across North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, aims to unify African-descended communities globally. Leaders explained that the organization provides resources for its members, with services that include support from “cradle to grave,” focusing on economic empowerment, community service, and assistance during times of need.

The event concluded with recognition of contributions made by local community members, especially those involved in farming initiatives aimed at self-sufficiency.

Edward Anti popularly called Lion Jaffy, head of the federation’s farming project, introduced members who have worked to establish sustainable farms, symbolizing the group’s commitment to economic independence.

With the coronation celebration and EWFI Radio launch, Ghana’s Rastafarian community aims to strengthen the legacy of Emperor Haile Selassie and further their mission to achieve African unity.
