A bunch of budget Chromebooks will receive updates for at least 12 years (through 2035)

One of the selling points for Chromebooks is that they receive automatic software updates delivered by Google on a regular basis, adding new features and performance enhancements over time. At least, until Google stops delivering updates.

And that was a big problem for a while, because originally Google only promised to deliver updates for 5 years. Extending it to 8 years felt like a step in the right direction. And last year Google announced that it would deliver automatic software updates for at least 10 years from the time a model was launched. Now it looks like Google’s not done extending its update policy though: a bunch of recently released Chromebooks are now showing that they’ll be supported for at least 12 years.

The Lenovo Flex 3i 12.2″ convertible Chromebook w/Intel N100 often sells for under $300 and will now receive updates through June, 2035.

In a nutshell, more than two dozen Chromebooks featuring “nissa” baseboards are now expected to receive software updates at least until June, 2035.

All of the affected models are powered by Intel Alder Lake-N processors, including some budget models with an Intel N100 quad-core processor and some higher-priced Chromebook Plus models with up to an Intel Core i3-N305 octa-core processors.

Here’s a partial list of Chromebooks that are now showing support for updates through June, 2035:

One thing to keep in mind is that the clock starts ticking when a Chromebook baseboard is released, not the day that you buy a Chromebook. That’s why we’re saying that a bunch of models released in 2023 that will be supported through 2035 are getting 12 years of updates, even though we’re already a year into that cycle… which means there are 11 years left.
