Silverstone FLP01 is a modern PC case with a retro design ripped from the 1980s
by Brad Linder · LiliputingLast year PC case and peripheral maker Silverstone posted a picture of a retro-inspired computer chassis with a 1980s-inspired beige design, space for two 5.25 inch floppy drives, and a few modern touches like USB Type-C ports.
At the time, it was an April Fools’ Day joke. But after that image went viral, the company apparently went to work turning it into a real product. Silverstone recently showed off an early version of the upcoming case, which will be available soon in Japan for about $130.
The Silverstone FLP01 has a design that’s heavily inspired by the NEC PC-9800, with its beige color, ridges around the middle, and a design that’s not only meant to be laid horizontally, but which is sturdy enough for you to place a monitor on top of the case.
Since there’s not much user for floppy disc drives these days, the FLP01 doesn’t actually have any. Instead, what looks like the top 5.25 inch drive bay is a door that lifts open to reveal an optical disc drive (which is honestly a bit anachronistic in its own right these days). The one on the bottom hides a set of USB and headphone ports.
While the outside of the case looks like it was ripped straight out of 1982, inside the 440 x 362 x 170mm (17.3″ x 14.3″ x 6.7″) case there’s room for an ATX motherboard, a PSU, and even a water cooler. Silverstone’s demo unit was equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GPU.
The Silverstone FLP01 should be available in Japan in the first quarter of 2025. There’s no word on whether the company will offer the case outside of Japan.
