Walmart’s new budget Android tablets range from $97 to $288
by Brad Linder · LiliputingWalmart has been selling low-cost Android tablets under the Onn brand for years, and this month the company launched six new models with prices ranging from $97 to $288.
Unsurprisingly, the entry-level model isn’t much to write home about. But at a time when gadgets are generally getting more expensive (thanks to Ramageddon), it’s nice to see any new hardware in this category priced under $100.
In fact, these days, even Amazon Fire tablets, which are known for their low prices, start at $130. And Fire tablets ship with a fork of Android called Fire OS that lacks access to the Google Play Store (unless you install it yourself). That operating system’s days may also be numbered – Amazon hasn’t announced plans to phase it out for tablets yet, but all future Fire TV Stick media streamers are expected to run the Linux-based Vega OS instead.
All of which is to say that it’s nice to see some competition in the budget tablet space. Walmart’s new tablets ship with Android 16 and have the Play Store pre-installed.
Two of the new tablets are aimed at kids, while four are mainstream models.
The cheapest one is the onn 7″ Core, which has a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 2 GHz MediaTek Helio G80 octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. It sells for $97.
The onn 8.1″ Core tablet is a $138 model with an 8.1 inch, 1524 x 1000 pixel IPS LCD display, a 2.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 octa-core processor, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It seems well positioned to take on the Amazon Fire HD 8.
Meanwhile the Onn 11″ Core tablet appears to be more of a Fire HD 10 competitor, offering more memory and storage than Amazon’s tablet, while having a lower starting price. This $167 tablet has a 1840 x 1280 pixel display, a 2.2 GHz MediaTek Helio G99 octa-core processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
The most powerful new model is the onn 13″ Pro, which has a 13 inch, 2400 x 1600 pixel screen, an unspecified 2.6 GHz MediaTek processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Priced at $288, it costs more than an Amazon Fire Max 11. But one thing to keep in mind is that Walmart’s tablet ships standard with a Folio case and stylus. Both of those are optional accessories for the Fire Max 11, adding to the total cost of Amazon’s most expensive tablet.
Walmart’s new kids tablets come with a kid-friendly software user interface and a bumper case. There are two models:
- Onn 8 Kids Tablet – 1524 x 1000px/MTK(?)4GB/64GB for $118
- Onn 11 Kids tablet – 1840 x 1280 px/MTK Helio G80/4GB/64GB for $136
All of these tablets have pretty lousy camera specs, which is why I didn’t even bother including those details above, but as you’d expect the higher-priced tablets do appear to have slightly better cameras.
