Skyblivion modders reveal a former volunteer is "threatening to sue for damages upwards of €30,000" over work on the unofficial Oblivion remake project
"I just hope that we can get this resolved as soon as possible and get on with the planned release"
· Rock Paper ShotgunThe team behind Oblivion remake mod Skyblivion are being threatened with legal action by a former volunteer on the project, according a video posted by current lead Kyle 'Rebelzize' Rebel. The situation looks like it'll need resolving before the mod, which was originally set to release last year, can finally make its way out of the Imperial City sewers.
"Recently, a former volunteer who contributed to Skyblivion’s development departed the project," the Skyblivion team outlined in a written statement and a YouTube video presented by Rebel. "We want to be completely transparent with the community about what has happened since their departure. After they left the project, we had several discussions regarding the continued use and maintenance of his work. The main disagreement centered on their objection to our decompilation of parts of their work — a necessary step our team took to maintain functionality and fix issues in systems already built into the project after access to the original source code repository was revoked."
"To protect ourselves from more stress and try and ensure a clean break, we decided to take the high road," Rebel explained in the video. "We have removed that work entirely. Thankfully due to some of our volunteers stepping up and simply learning new skill sets, as well as help from prominent Skyrim modders and permissions to use and integrate existing Skyrim mods, we've been able to implement replacements that we think fit Skyblivion's needs, in some cases even better than what we had before."
However, Rebel and co claim that despite them making it "clear multiple times to this former volunteer that we have removed their contributions", the ex-Skyblivion dev is "threatening to sue for damages upwards of €30,000". They claim that the ex-volunteer's legal threats "demand personal information of multiple volunteers [on Skyblivion] including full names and addresses". Rebel noted that the team see these demands as "something that we are simply not willing to share with someone that we don't even know" and feel are "just completely disproportionate for what's really going on".
The modders say they've consulted with legal counsel already and have a lawyer on standby if necessary. Though, since said lawyer's services will - the Skyblivion team claim - cost €2,500, they've put out a call for anyone with "a background in IP law or GDPR law" willing to offer them pro bono legal aid to get in touch via the mod's website.
"Please don't turn this into any kind of witch hunt, despite this very unfortunate situation," Rebel said in closing. "We don't wish ill on a former volunteer over all this and I just hope that we can get this resolved as soon as possible and get on with the planned release, which is really what we're working towards. You will hear more from us soon on the actual release."
This situation makes it two years running that Skyblivion's found itself engulfed in drama during the final months of what's supposed to be its release year. In 2025, former volunteer Dee Keyes had a public disagreement with the project's leads over whether releasing the mod that year was a reasonable or achievable goal. Skyblivion was subsequently delayed into 2026.
This past weekend, Keyes tweeted a response to the Skyblivion team's statement on the alleged legal threats. "I've had my issues with the project and left because of it, but I left knowing that my work would remain with [Skyblivion] (happily so) and didn't want to hurt the project's progress," he wrote. "I understand [the former volunteer] being upset, but I really don't see why they'd go so far as to demand their work ripped out."
Here's hoping the Skyblivion team and the ex-volunteer can resolve things without all the expense and effort that'd inevitably be necessary if the dispute ends up in court. Given there are now less than two months left of 2026, and Skyblivion's modders have this on their plates on top of any remaining work needed to finish their creation, I'd personally be very surprised if its release doesn't end up being pushed into next year.
