Air quality in eastern, western and central Singapore in unhealthy range

SINGAPORE: Air quality in Singapore deteriorated on Monday (Sep 14) with three regions recording unhealthy levels, as hotspots and haze persisted in parts of Indonesia.
The central region was the first to enter the unhealthy range on Monday after four days of moderate readings, with its 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) at 102 at noon. By 7pm, the central region's reading had climbed to 123.
The eastern and western regions entered the unhealthy band at 101 at 4pm, with readings in both regions creeping up to 108 and 107 respectively as of 7pm.
PSI readings in the northern and southern regions remained in the moderate range.

In its daily haze advisory on Monday, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said that due to a shift in the prevailing winds to blow from east-southeast, moderate to dense smoke plumes from fires in Kalimantan drifted towards Singapore.
Some haze was also observed to drift from southern Sumatra.
While there were brief showers over a few parts of Singapore on Monday, dry conditions are forecast over the country and the surrounding region in the coming days.
NEA said that Singapore will likely be affected by haze as the prevailing winds are forecast to continue blowing from the southeast to east-southeast.
The 24-hr PSI for Singapore is forecast to be in the high moderate to mid-unhealthy range over the 24 hours from 6pm.
In an earlier update, NEA said that it was closely monitoring air quality across Singapore.
It added that dry conditions had been observed across the southern region of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Monday morning, except for showers over parts of Sumatra in Indonesia.
Hotspots were detected in southern Sumatra, as well as western, central and southern Kalimantan.
"A few hotspots were also detected in peninsular Malaysia and Java," NEA said, adding that moderate to dense haze had been observed in central and southern Sumatra, as well as western and central Kalimantan.
Transboundary haze was also observed in parts of Sarawak in East Malaysia, as well as peninsular Malaysia and southern Vietnam, with air quality monitoring stations in the affected areas reporting moderate to unhealthy readings.
Earlier in the month on Sep 4, the 24-hour PSI spiked into the unhealthy range in central Singapore for the first time since 2023, prompting NEA to start providing daily haze advisories from that evening.
The unhealthy PSI range is 101 to 200. Readings from 201 and 300 are considered "very unhealthy" and those above 300 are "hazardous".
