My mom crocheted me a pumpkin costume. I screamed at her, “This looks cheap!” and refused to wear it. I wore a store bought costume and had the worst Halloween of my life. This year she’s gone. I found that pumpkin costume today and cried because inside the pocket was the receipt for the store-bought one, still folded up small, the exact one I made her buy instead.
Thirty years and she never once brought it up. Showed my sister, expecting her to understand why I was a wreck over it. She just said, “Why does it matter now? You can’t apologize to a receipt.” Maybe she’s right. I still can’t put it down and I miss my mom.
